I’ve found if you’re drafting late, say 8-12, you’re better off going WR/WR since you can easily net two of the top guys and still swing two number 2 RBs in rounds 3 and 4. The mocks I’ve done where I go WR/RB I end up with a much bigger drop off at WR for not much of a gain at RB in round 2. The QBs are deep enough that you can wait until round 5 and still score Kolb or Flacco most of the time.

Im high on drafting WR WR after the 5th pick and here is the reason: Last year only 2 or 3 RBs of the top 15 drafted reached or beat their ADP. Of the top 15 WRs 8 reached or exceeded their ADP. RBs tend to emerge as the season plays on and you have RB starters for teams like oakland, tb, seattle, buffalo, washington (someone will get the work), etc. that can be picked up later in the draft after WR and QB and TE (which are super deep this year) have all been drafted.

I have the 10th pick out of 12 where we get .5 pts / recep. I really think having 2 out of the top 7 WR is huge this year. In my mocks I have been left with McCoy and J Stewart as my next picks and grabbing Kolb with either the 5th or 6th round pick. Who the top 7 WR are this year is the tough question.

Here is my guess:

A Johnson – unreal talent and even more chemistry with Schaub

M Austin – Romo loves him and he wants to get paid. Did you know he only started 11 games and led the NFC in yards and had 11 TDs…he will be on my team

R Moss – Tough schedule but hopefully will be healthy and people are counting out the pats and thats when they play their best.

B Marshall – Reception beast and Henne can sling it. Miami will be good this year and Marshall will be a huge part of that.

G Jennings – Down year last year but has the skill and the quarterback to be a top 5 WR easily.

R White – Has been a stud since day 1 in the NFL. He will continue to be and M Ryan’s 3rd year should be a good one.

R Wayne – He has proven to be a top 5 WR too many times to not list him. Possible down year with his weapons around him but he did have 100 receptions and 10 tds last year.

All in all, I want 2 of these guys on my team and thats not happening if I wait till the 3rd round. The next month will decide which 2 it will be.

I HAVE DONE 2 DOZEN MOCKS MYSELF… All from the 10th slot of a ten team league. My reward for winning it all last season. It seems to me that passing on whoever you feel is the top WR left at the end of round one will doom you to being below average at the position. I feel you need to grab one top WR end of 1st rd or start of 2nd rd. So far my strongest mock drafts have been where I held to this strategy and waited until rd 4 to take my QB…

I see what is projected, I research the projected, yet every year 1 or 2 of out league reach out and do the odd thing, ie draft Wayne, or due to last year yielding a load of teams utilizing running back by committee, QB’s are slated to go in the first round. I agree that picking a top tier wide out early is a reach, but with the way of the NFL today, are there any true single running back teams left?

The top tiers of both RB and WR are limited, ending at about the 7th or 8th pick, overall. Because QB is deep and you can get a close proximity to the top pick (that could go in first) it’s too easy to wait. That really leaves 4 or 5 slots at the end of the first round that is a fairly large drop off. That is compounded by the fact that the next tier is long, and can go from #8 or so through the next round and a half. In other words, picks 8-12 are likely drafting the same team as the top 7 picks, but minus those top tier players. It’s going to be a tough year to fight from the back of the pack. I’ve done over 50 mock drafts from assorted positions, and just can’t get a top team below pick #7. They are coming automatically from picks #1-#3.

It’s because there are only 2-3 receivers that are “elite” options this year. AJ, Moss, and Fitzgerald is borderline because of the huge QB drop-off. You’re going to get elite production from AJ or Moss, so they’re going in the first round. But past the first 5-6 RBs, AJ and Moss, people are either drafting an elite QB, or they’re *reaching* for a low end RB1. DeAngelo Williams, SJax, Mendy. Your first round picks should guarantee you elite production, barring injury or unforseen circumstance. With Reggie Wayne approaching 32 years old, and a full compliment of dangerous receiving options beside him to share a limited # of targets, people don’t want to spend a first round pick on him.

I really don’t get the Reggie Wayne ADP this year, using
any 12 team format.
No way is he a first-round or early second-round pick. There are
too many options in Indy for him to have a year that would warrant
such a high pick.
I think Roddy White is not only better value, but will put up better numbers.
Just another opinion.

Wayne as a first round pick is a mistake imo. He did not play well the final eight games of last season and the weapons are in abundance in Indy.
