Russell was waived by the Giants on Sunday, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Russell spent the 2018 season on the Giants' practice squad. The 26-year-old was activated for Week 17 against Dallas and saw the field on 15 snaps but was unable to record a statistic. Russell made a final push for a roster spot in New York's final preseason game -- catching five of 15 targets for 92 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winner -- but ultimately fell short.

Russell caught five of 15 targets for 92 yards and two touchdowns in Thursday's 31-29 win over the Patriots in the preseason finale.
Analysis: Russell scored a 35-yard touchdown in the first quarter, then won the game with a 14-yard score on the final play of the fourth. The 26-year-old Toledo product is still a long shot to make the roster, but perhaps this heroic effort will convince Giants brass to keep him on board, at least while fellow wide receiver Golden Tate serves a four-game suspension to start the season.

Russell was promoted from the practice squad Saturday.
Analysis: Russell will take the place of Jawill Davis (knee) on the 53-man active roster. Davis' injury leaves the Giants without a suitable punt returner, but Corey Coleman appears set to fill in at the role while Russell will act as depth at the wide receiver position.
