Brock Osweiler: Calls it a career

Osweiler announced his retirement Wednesday, Mike Klis of 9News Denver reports.

Analysis: Osweiler struggled to find his footing over the last three years, making stops in Houston, Denver and Miami, so he'll hang up the cleats. The Broncos' 2012 second-round pick is best known for the team's 2015 Super Bowl run. Although he didn't play in the big game, there's no doubt a major reason they made it there. Osweiler took over for an injured Peyton Manning and registered a 5-2 record to secure the top seed in the AFC. Manning went on to win his second Super Bowl and the Broncos' third. Osweiler finished his career with a 15-15-0 record, 7,418 passing yards, 37 touchdowns and 31 interceptions over 49 games (30 started).

Brock Osweiler: Mixed bag in 2018

Osweiler threw for 1247 yards, six touchdowns and four interceptions during the 2018 season.

Analysis: Osweiler did not throw a pass during Miami's final six games of the season due to the return of starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill. The 28-year-old was thrust into the starting lineup from Week 6 to Week 10, leading the Dolphins to two wins and three losses during that stretch, while completing 63 percent of his passing attempts. After throwing for 380 yards and three touchdowns in his first start, a Week 6 win over the Bears, Osweiler achieved mixed results through the next four games. Once thought of as a potential franchise quarterback, Osweiler looked much more serviceable playing a backup role during the 2018 season. Set to become a free agent this offseason, if Miami doesn't chose to bring Osweiler back it seems likely that he'll land a No. 2 job elsewhere in the league.

Brock Osweiler: In uniform Sunday

Osweiler (back) is listed as active for Sunday's game against the Jaguars, the Miami Herald reports.

Analysis: Osweiler was a late addition to the Dolphins' Week 16 injury report, but he'll be available to back up Ryan Tannehill on Sunday, while fellow QB David Fales is among the team's inactives.

Brock Osweiler: Late addition to injury report

The Dolphins added Osweiler to their injury report hours before Sunday's game against the Jaguars with a back issue, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports. He's considered questionable for the contest.

Analysis: Osweiler didn't appear on the injury report Wednesday through Friday, so the assumption is that he practiced fully all three days and developed the back issue at some point after the final session of the week. If Osweiler is unable to suit up Sunday, David Fales would check in as the backup to starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill.

Brock Osweiler: Returns to No. 2 role

Osweiler is in line to serve as the Dolphins' backup quarterback Sunday against the Colts with coach Adam Gase naming Ryan Tannehill (shoulder) the Week 12 starter, Adam H. Beasley and Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald report.

Analysis: After missing the Dolphins' previous five games with an injury to his throwing shoulder, Tannehill cleared up any lingering concern about his health coming out of the team's Week 11 bye at Tuesday's practice. While Tannehill didn't display his usual game velocity on the throws, the report notes that he showed good accuracy while incrementally increasing his throwing distance. Gase apparently agreed with that assessment, prompting him to turn the gig back over to Tannehill after Osweiler went 2-3 while completing 63 percent of his attempts for 1,212 yards, five touchdowns and four interceptions during his run as starter. Unless Tannehill's shoulder acts up again over the Dolphins' final six contests of 2018, don't expect Osweiler to see any snaps outside of garbage time.

Brock Osweiler: Commits two turnovers

Osweiler completed 23 of 37 pass attempts for 213 yards and one interception during Sunday's 31-12 loss to the Packers. He also lost a fumble.

Analysis: Osweiler generated just one play longer than 25 yards on the day as he finished averaging an underwhelming 5.8 yards per attempt. He lost a fumble on the opening drive as his team moved into Green Bay territory and threw an interception in his own end in the third quarter. Osweiler is averaging just 208 passing yards per game over the last four and hasn't thrown a touchdown in any of his last three. He'll enjoy a much-needed bye next week before facing the Colts in Week 12.

Brock Osweiler: Getting another start before bye week

Osweiler will start Sunday's game in Green Bay, Cameron Wolfe of ESPN.com reports.

Analysis: Ryan Tannehill (shoulder) will miss a fifth straight game ahead of Miami's Week 11 bye. The team hopes to get him back after the break, but coach Adam Gase didn't sound too optimistic when discussing Tannehill's progress Wednesday afternoon. Osweiler will take aim at a Packers defense that's been mediocre against the pass, surrendering 248 yards and 1.8 touchdowns per game through the air.

Brock Osweiler: Likely to get another start

Osweiler seems likely to get another start Week 10 in Green Bay, Cameron Wolfe of ESPN.com reports.

Analysis: Osweiler was essentially a non-factor in Sunday's 13-6 win over the Jets, completing 15 of 24 pass attempts for 139 yards. His overall performance the past four weeks has been thoroughly mediocre, but he's at least kept Miami in the wild-card race while Ryan Tannehill recovers from a shoulder injury. It makes sense for the team to keep Tannehill out until after a Week 11 bye, but coach Adam Gase said he won't make an announcement until Wednesday.

Brock Osweiler: Plays minimal role in win over Jets

Osweiler completed 15 of 24 pass attempts for 139 yards Sunday against the Jets. He also carried three times for four yards in the 13-6 win.

Analysis: Osweiler completed 63 percent of his pass attempts, but most of them went for short gains as he finished averaging 5.8 yards per attempt. He faced treacherous field conditions and a solid Jets defense on the day, both of which factored into his lowest yardage output of the season. On a positive note, Osweiler went without a turnover for the first time this season and it was his second straight game without an interception. Even though he'll be forced to throw often next Sunday against the Packers, Osweiler doesn't warrant a starting spot on many fantasy rosters.

Brock Osweiler: Tabbed for Week 9 start

Osweiler has been named as the starter for Sunday's game against the Jets, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Analysis: Ryan Tannehill (shoulder) has been ruled out for another game and also seems to be in danger of missing Week 10 in Green Bay. At this point it might make sense for the Dolphins to simply wait until after their Week 11 bye. In the meantime, Osweiler will take aim at a Jets defense that's been surprisingly stingy against the pass, allowing just 7.1 yards per attempt with a 15:10 TD:INT mark. Opposing quarterbacks have nonetheless managed 277 passing yards per game, taking advantage of elevated volume caused by Gang Green's struggles on the other side of the ball.

October 31, 2018 11:26 AM EST

Brock Osweiler: Trending toward another start

With Ryan Tannehill (shoulder) still not throwing as of Wednesday, "all indications are (that) Osweiler is starting again this week," according to Adam H. Beasley of the Miami Herald.

Analysis: The Dolphins have yet to confirm the assignment, but it looks very much like Osweiler will draw his fourth consecutive start this coming Sunday against the Jets. Osweiler took a step back in Week 7's 42-23 loss to the Texans, but he'll look to rebound this weekend against a New York squad that has dropped two straight games and is allowing an average of 259.8 passing yards to date.

October 31, 2018 10:04 AM EST

Brock Osweiler: Unimpressive in loss

Osweiler completed 21 of 37 passes for 241 yards and an interception during Miami's 42-23 loss to the Texans on Thursday.

Analysis: Osweiler regressed to the mean after two impressive starts under center in Miami, and looked thoroughly pedestrian against his former Texans team. Though Osweiler didn't play poorly enough lose the game for Miami, his lesser moments -- including missing an end zone pass to a wide open DeVante Parker in the third quarter -- did nothing to assist the team either. The best Dolphins' pass of the night was a 28-yard touchdown lob thrown by Danny Amendola to Kenyan Drake, and Osweiler himself failed to stretch the field except on a fluke 46-yard pass to Parker which was deflected from Jakeem Grant and into a defender's helmet. Expect the Dolphins to test the injury status of quarterback Ryan Tannehill (shoulder), in hopes that the former first-round pick will recover in time to start against the Jets in Week 9.

October 25, 2018 9:09 PM EST

Brock Osweiler: Getting another start Week 8

Osweiler will start Thursday's game in Houston, Cameron Wolfe of ESPN.com reports.

Analysis: Ryan Tannehill (shoulder) has been ruled out for at least one more game while recovering from an AC joint sprain. Osweiler has done nice work as a fill-in starter, but he'll now face a major challenge against a red-hot Houston defense with both Kenny Stills (groin) and Albert Wilson (hip) unavailable.

October 22, 2018 1:01 PM EST

Brock Osweiler: Efficient in loss

Osweiler completed 22 of 31 passes for 239 yards and two touchdowns during Sunday's 32-21 loss to the Lions. He added a two-yard run during the contest.

Analysis: Osweiler pulled Miami to within a score midway through the fourth quarter, rolling to his right and uncorking a 24-yard strike between two defenders to Danny Amendola. After bouncing around the league in recent years, Osweiler has played remarkably well in two plus games in relief of Ryan Tannehill (shoulder), boasting a quarterback rating of 107.0. With a short turnaround before Thursday's game against a Houston defense ranked in the bottom 10 in opponent passer rating, Osweiler looks primed for another start and another solid outing.

October 21, 2018 1:35 PM EST

Brock Osweiler: Getting another start

Osweiler will start Sunday's game against the Lions, Cameron Wolfe of ESPN.com reports.

Analysis: Ryan Tannehill (shoulder) has already been ruled out for another game and will have a tough time making it back for a Thursday contest against the Texans in Week 8. The Dolphins are hoping Osweiler can recreate some of his magic from Sunday's 31-28 win over the Bears, but history suggests it's something we shouldn't count on, even in a favorable home matchup against a Detroit defense that's surrendered 8.1 yards per pass attempt.

October 17, 2018 11:31 AM EST

Brock Osweiler: Explodes for 380 yards as fill-in starter

Osweiler completed 28 of 44 passes for 380 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions while rushing for eight yards on two carries in Sunday's 31-28 overtime win over Chicago.

Analysis: Osweiler got the start with Ryan Tannehill sidelined by a shoulder injury. The hulking backup looked competent early, finding tight end Nick O'Leary for a five-yard touchdown on the team's second drive. He was intercepted on a deep heave in the final minute of the first half, then got picked off again early in the second quarter to set up a 12-yard Bears touchdown on the next play. Osweiler rebounded by hitting Albert Wilson for touchdowns of 43 and 75 yards in the fourth quarter, with Wilson taking short passes to the house in both cases. It looks like Osweiler can approximate or exceed Tannehill's performance, but it remains to be seen who will be under center against Detroit in Week 7.

October 14, 2018 3:20 PM EST

Brock Osweiler: Starting in Week 6

With Ryan Tannehill (shoulder) inactive for Sunday's Week 6 tilt against the Bears, Osweiler will be the Dolphins' starting quarterback, Cameron Wolfe of ESPN.com reports.

Analysis: Osweiler will have the benefit of a fully stocked receiver corps with the return of DeVante Parker (quadriceps), but his spot start will come against an aggressive Bears defense that's allowed the second-fewest passing yards (922) in the league while also snagging the third-most interceptions (eight). Osweiler has only seen action in one game this season, completing four of five passes for 35 yards and a touchdown in mop-up duty against the Patriots in Week 4.

October 14, 2018 8:53 AM EST

Brock Osweiler: Throws touchdown in blowout loss

Osweiler completed four of five passes for 35 yards and one touchdown during the Dolphins' 38-7 loss to the Patriots on Sunday. He also rushed once for seven yards.

Analysis: Starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill looked lost throughout the Week 4 tilt, managing only five yards per attempt and consistently turning the ball over. Tannehill was benched once the game was completely out of reach, and Osweiler led Miami on a meaningless scoring drive, slinging a six yard pass to Frank Gore. Osweiler's performance should firmly secure him the backup job, but expect Tannehill to retake the reigns and attempt to bounce back against the Bengals in Week 5.

October 1, 2018 1:53 PM EST

Brock Osweiler: Slated for backup duties Sunday

Osweiler will back up Ryan Tannehill during Sunday's game against the Titans, Cameron Wolfe of ESPN.com reports.

Analysis: Osweiler beat out David Fales to work as a backup to Tannehill, who is returning form a torn ACL and making his first appearance since 2016. Osweiler suited up for six games in Denver last season, completing 56 percent of his passes for 1,088 yards, five touchdowns and five interceptions.

September 9, 2018 8:47 AM EST

Brock Osweiler: Still competing for pecking order

Head coach Adam Gase recently indicated that the competition for the No. 2 quarterback job between Osweiler and David Fales is "day-to-day," Adam H. Beasley of the Miami Herald reports.

Analysis: Neither Osweiler or Fales did much to separate himself this summer, and so the battle for the backup rages on. Regardless of who wins out, it's hard to envision either as an attractive fantasy asset should something happen to Ryan Tannehill.
