Struggles in limited action

Perkins completed 19 of 34 passes for 161 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions, and added 19 rushing attempts for 90 yards during the 2022 season.

Analysis: Perkins flashed some promise during the 2022 preseason, completing 35 of 49 pass attempts for 399 yards and two touchdowns while adding 73 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground on 18 attempts. That dual-threat ability was called upon in Week 11, when Matthew Stafford (neck) left midway through the third quarter, and Perkins performed admirably with 64 passing yards and 39 rushing yards in limited action, although a 50 percent completion percentage was a concerning sign. Perkins started in Week 12 with John Wolford out with a neck injury of his own, and struggled mightily, completing just 13 of 23 passes for 100 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions, while tacking on 44 rushing yards. The Virginia product would only see five more snaps on offense the remainder of the year, as Wolford and Baker Mayfield served as the starters. Perkins is a restricted free agent going into 2023, but his struggles when called upon this season may see him looking elsewhere for work as a backup.

Suiting up Thursday

Perkins is listed as active Thursday versus the Raiders, Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic reports.

Analysis: Both John Wolford and newcomer Baker Mayfield, who was claimed off waivers Tuesday, are available to the Rams and believed to be the two options to start at quarterback for the team Week 14, so Perkins likely is destined for clipboard duty and not much more. Still, if Perkins somehow finds his way onto the field Thursday, he'll be bringing a 56 completion percentage, 4.7 yards per attempt and one touchdown versus two interceptions in addition to 18 carries for 92 yards from his four appearances (one start) this season.

Looks to be third on depth chart

Perkins appears to be the Rams' third option at quarterback for Thursday's game against the Raiders, with Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reporting that the newly acquired Baker Mayfield will be in line to start the Week 14 contest if incumbent John Wolford (neck) isn't available.

Analysis: When Matthew Stafford entered the concussion protocol for the second time this season following Week 11 action before being effectively ruled out for the remainder of the campaign with a spinal contusion, Perkins stepped in for his first NFL start Week 12. He completed just 13 of 23 attempts for 100 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions to go with nine carries for 44 yards in a 26-10 loss to the Chiefs before moving to the bench Week 13 in favor of Wolford. Though Wolford didn't fare any better in last week's loss to the Saints (14 for 26 for 178 yards and two interceptions), he's tentatively in line to direct the offense Thursday so long as the sore neck that resulted in him being listed as questionable for the contest doesn't hamper him in pregame warmups. Mayfield also appears to have quickly jumped ahead of Perkins on the depth chart since joining the Rams on Tuesday after being claimed off waivers from the Panthers. Pelissero reports that Mayfield practiced Wednesday and is up to speed with the Week 14 game plan, so the Rams are content to give him a look as the starter if Wolford can't go.

Not starting Sunday, but may play

Coach Sean McVay named John Wolford the Rams' starting quarterback for Sunday's game versus the Seahawks, but Perkins also has "a chance" play, Stu Jackson of the team's official site reports.

Analysis: While L.A.'s nominal No. 1 QB Matthew Stafford (neck) has cleared the concussion protocol, McVay ruled him out for Week 13 action and also noted an appearance from Stafford the rest of the season is uncertain, at best. That leaves Wolford and Perkins as the team's available signal-callers, and the former will get the nod Sunday. If Perkins sees the field this weekend, though, his scrambling ability may be tapped, as he's averaged 5.1 YPC on his 17 rushes in three games on the campaign.

Struggles in first NFL start

Perkins completed 13 of 23 passes for 100 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions during Sunday's 26-10 loss to Kansas City. He added 44 rushing yards on nine carries.

Analysis: Making the first start of his NFL career, Perkins struggled to move the ball through the air but did manage to lead the Rams in rushing yards. His first career TD pass went to Van Jefferson in the fourth quarter, but Los Angeles was down 20-3 at the time. With Allen Robinson (foot) now out for the year and Cooper Kupp (ankle) on IR as well, Perkins won't have much help even if he does get another start in Week 13 against the Seahawks in place of Matthew Stafford (neck).

Closing in on first career start

Perkins warmed up with the Rams' No. 1 offense ahead of Sunday's game at Kansas City, all but confirming he'll be L.A.'s starting quarterback, Gilbert Manzano of The Orange County Register reports.

Analysis: Perkins also handled the first-team reps during Week 12 prep, with Matthew Stafford (concussion protocol/neck) out indefinitely and John Wolford recovering from a stiff neck. Now that his status is confirmed, Perkins will direct an offense that will be without top wide receivers Cooper Kupp (ankle, IR) and Allen Robinson (ankle, inactive), meaning Van Jefferson, Tyler Higbee and Ben Skowronek are the notable pass catchers available to the Rams. In 30 snaps across two appearances this season, Perkins has completed six of 11 passes for 61 yards and notched eight carries for 43 yards.

Likely trending toward start

Rams head coach Sean McVay confirmed Perkins received the first-team reps in practice this week, but he wouldn't say whether Perkins or John Wolford would receive the starting assignment at quarterback for Sunday's game in Kansas City, Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic reports.

Analysis: Matthew Stafford (neck/concussion protocol) has already been ruled out for his second game in three weeks following his early exit during the Rams' Week 11 loss to the Saints. While Wolford was sidelined for that game due to a neck strain, Perkins replaced the injured Stafford last week and completed five of 10 pass attempts for 64 yards and carried five times for 39 yards across 25 snaps. Though Wolford has been the Rams' No. 2 quarterback when healthy this season and even started in Week 10 while Stafford was in the concussion protocol, he struggled to move the offense and turned the ball over two times in a 27-17 loss to the Cardinals. Wolford was limited in practice Wednesday before returning to the field as full participant Thursday and Friday, but his poor showing Week 10 may have resulted in him falling behind Perkins on the depth chart. Confirmation on the Rams' plans at quarterback may not arrive until hours before Sunday's 4:25 p.m. ET kickoff, but thanks to the rushing ability he displayed Week 11 and during his collegiate career at Virginia, Perkins would likely be the more appealing fantasy option of the two quarterbacks if he ends up getting the nod. If he starts, Perkins would be working behind a porous offensive line that will be without its starting center in Brian Allen (thumb) and perhaps its starting left tackle in Ty Nsekhe (ankle), who is listed as questionable.

Taking first-team reps

Perkins will take most of the QB snaps in practice this week with Matthew Stafford (neck) ruled out for Sunday's game against the Chiefs and John Wolford (neck) uncertain to play, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Analysis: Coach Sean McVay hasn't ruled Wolford out but did say Wednesday that Stafford won't be able to play. Perkins filled in for Stafford in Sunday's 27-20 loss to New Orleans, completing five of 10 passes for 64 yards and taking five carries for 39 yards. Perkins is more mobile than other two QBs but nonetheless would make for a poor fantasy option as a third-stringer pushed into duty for an offense that also has a lot of significant injuries at other positions.

Nov 23, 2022 1:28 PM EST

Expected to take first-team reps

Perkins is expected to take first-team reps at quarterback and potentially start Sunday's road matchup against the Chiefs, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

Analysis: Perkins was serviceable during Sunday's 27-20 loss to the Saint, when he relieved Matthew Stafford (head) with 5:47 remaining in the third quarter and completed five of 10 passes for 64 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. He also ran five times for 39 yards. With top backup John Wolford (neck) also dealing with injury Wednesday, Perkins could be called upon to draw his first career NFL start Sunday in Kansas City. Fantasy managers will need to monitor the practice activity of Los Angeles' entire quarterback room Week 12.

Nov 23, 2022 9:52 AM EST

Serviceable in emergency duty

Perkins took over for Matthew Stafford (head) with 5:47 remaining in the third quarter of Sunday's 27-20 loss to the Saints and completed five of 10 passes for 64 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions and ran five times for 39 yards.

Analysis: Considering he had all of one NFL pass attempt under his belt prior to Sunday, Perkins handled himself fairly well after being thrust into action. The Virginia product could be in line to serve as no less than the No. 2 quarterback in Week 12 against the Chiefs if either Stafford or John Wolford (neck) are unable to suit up.

Nov 20, 2022 7:24 PM EST

Minimal stats in first NFL game

Perkins completed one pass for -3 yards and rushed three times for four yards in Sunday's 27-17 loss to the Cardinals.

Analysis: Sunday marked the first time in Perkins' three years with the Rams that he was able to take the field outside of the preseason, but his five snaps on offense resulted in a disappointing one total yard of offense. John Wolford didn't fare much better in the lead role, as he only accumulated 147 passing yards before padding his stats on the final drive in garbage time. Matthew Stafford (concussion) will have to clear the concussion protocol in order to return for Week 11's showdown with the Saints, but neither Wolford nor Perkins would be inspiring choices for fantasy if Stafford were unable to play.

Scores in preseason finale

Perkins completed 14 of 19 pass attempts for 143 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions and rushed eight times for 33 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's 16-7 loss to the Bengals.

Analysis: With John Wolford (thumb) missing the final in-game action of the preseason, this was Perkins' final opportunity to make a statement and become the primary backup to Matthew Stafford. The results were a mixed bag, as the Rams either punted or fumbled on their first six drives before Perkins led a 10-play, 80-yard drive that was highlighted by a 32-yard pass to preseason phenom Lance McCutcheon. Perkins then finished the job with his legs, scoring a three-yard rushing touchdown for the Rams' first points of the contest with 11:25 to go in the contest. The final decision between Wolford and Perkins may come down to availability, which may tip the needle to Perkins to start the season if Wolford still struggles to find a grip on the football during his recovery from a torn fingernail.

Aug 27, 2022 6:28 PM EST

Efficient in loss

Perkins completed 11 of 13 passes for 123 yards in Friday's 24-20 preseason loss against the Texans. He also rushed two times for one yard.

Analysis: After a first half in which John Wolford suffered a total of five sacks, Perkins was sacked just once in the second half. Perkins' connection with breakout wide receiver Lance McCutcheon was on full display again, with Perkins connecting on all three of his pass attempts to the dynamic playmaker for 45 yards. McCutcheon's inability to get out of bounds on the final snap of the game cost Perkins the opportunity to go for a game-winning touchdown, but another quality half of action has Perkins firmly in the conversation for the backup job to Matthew Stafford going into the final preseason game against the Bengals next Saturday.

Set to play second half Friday

Head coach Sean McVay said Perkins is in line to play the second half of Friday's preseason contest against Houston, while John Wolford is expected to play the first half, Sarah Barshop of ESPN.com reports.

Analysis: After a successful Week 1 of preseason where Perkins threw for 133 yards and two touchdowns, and also rushed for 39 yards, another score and a two-point conversion, he's slated to command the offense after halftime in the Rams' second exhibition. The third-year pro enters the 2022 season in line to remain the No. 3 quarterback on the team's depth chart behind Matthew Stafford and John Wolford.

Aug 17, 2022 2:07 PM EST

Three scores in win

Perkins completed 10 of 17 passes for 133 yards and two touchdowns in the Rams' 29-22 win over the Chargers on Saturday. He also rushed eight times for 39 yards and a touchdown.

Analysis: Perkins made a strong statement for a spot on the roster with an effective performance at the helm, utilizing his legs for an 11-yard touchdown scamper and his arm to throw a pair of touchdowns to rookie undrafted free agent Lance McCutcheon. Perkins, entering his third year in the league with zero in-game action, will still likely enter the year as the third-string quarterback barring injury, with John Wolford as the primary backup to Matthew Stafford (elbow).

Aug 14, 2022 7:44 AM EST

Inactive as third QB

Perkins (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's Week matchup against the Colts, Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times reports.

Analysis: John Wolford had an appendectomy early in training camp, which meant that Perkins got a lot of playing time throughout preseason. However, with Wolford fully recovered, Perkins has served as the team's third quarterback in each of the first two weeks of the season.

Sep 19, 2021 9:15 AM EST

Secures spot on initial roster

Perkins will make the Rams' initial 53-man roster as the third quarterback, Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic reports.

Analysis: Starting quarterback Matthew Stafford injured his thumb early in training camp, but he appears to be fully healthy, and backup John Wolford is still week-to-week after undergoing an appendectomy, so the Rams have decided to keep three quarterbacks on their initial roster. Perkins has been impressive during preseason action, but barring injury, he will likely not see any game action during the regular season.

Aug 31, 2021 11:01 AM EST

Set for Saturday start

Perkins is expected to start and play the entire game against Denver on Saturday, Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic reports.

Analysis: With tryout Delvin Hodges being waived by the Rams on Monday, and McVay's announcement of Perkins' projected workload for Saturday, it appears Perkins is positioned third on the quarterback depth chart ahead of the 2021 season. He's definitely on the preseason DFS radar, but there currently isn't much season-long fantasy value.

Aug 24, 2021 7:11 PM EST

Expected to split snaps Saturday

The Rams plan to split snaps between Perkins and Delvin Hodges in Saturday's preseason opener versus the Chargers, Lindsey Thiry of ESPN.com reports.

Analysis: After spending the 2020 season on the Rams' practice squad, Perkins signed a reserve/future contract with the team. He is expected to compete against Hodges for the team's backup quarterback position during training camp. The Virginia product threw for 6,210 yards, 47 touchdowns and 21 interceptions during his collegiate career. He also showcased skill on the ground by rushing for 1,691 yards and 20 scores in 27 games.

Aug 13, 2021 4:30 PM EST

Signs future deal

Perkins signed a reserve/future contract with the Rams on Monday, Stu Jackson of the team's official site reports.

Analysis: Perkins enjoyed a solid college career, throwing for 6,210 yards, 47 touchdowns and 21 interceptions and running for 1,691 yards and 20 scores over 27 games at Virginia. An undrafted rookie, Perkins spent the 2020 season on the Rams' practice squad. The 24-year-old will aim to win a backup role in Los Angeles this offseason.
