Cut from Carolina's practice squad

Smith was released from the Panthers' practice squad Tuesday, Darin Gantt of the Panthers' official site reports.

Analysis: Smith's release opened up room for the Panthers to add quarterback Josh Love to their practice squad. The Ohio State product has only appeared in one game this year (with Jacksonville), playing six offensive snaps and failing to haul in his only target. He will look to join his third team of the 2021 campaign.

Joins Carolina's practice squad

The Panthers signed Smith to their practice squad Wednesday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

Analysis: Smith began the 2021 campaign on the Jaguars' practice squad. He was promoted to the active roster ahead of Week 1 -- his first NFL appearance since 2019 -- and played just seven offensive snaps. He spent the rest of the season on Jacksonville's practice squad before getting cut Oct. 12. The 2015 second-round pick now joins a Carolina team that only has four healthy wideouts on their active roster. If Terrace Marshall (concussion) is sidelined again for Week 8, then Smith may join the 53-man roster for Sunday's matchup against the Falcons.

Let go by Jacksonville

The Jaguars cut Smith from their practice squad Monday, Doug Kyed of Pro Football Focus reports.

Analysis: Smith was promoted to the active roster ahead of Week 1 -- his first NFL game since 2019. He played seven offensive snaps but couldn't haul in his only target. The Ohio State product has spent the rest of the season on the practice squad and will now have to find a new team.

Elevated from practice squad

Smith was elevated to the active roster Saturday.

Analysis: Smith last played in an active game back in 2019 with the Cowboys, but his familiarity with coach Urban Meyer during their time together at Ohio State perhaps afforded him this spot on the team. Expect the 29-year-old to merely act as depth at wide receiver.

Let go by Jacksonville

The Jaguars released Smith on Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Analysis: After signing with the Jaguars due to injuries to two of Jacksonville's top receivers, Smith was then released. The 29-year-old most recently spent time with the Cowboys, where he played in four games and recorded five catches for 113 yards and a touchdown.

Signs with Jacksonville

The Jaguars signed Smith on Friday, John Shipley of SI.com reports.

Analysis: The Jaguars are currently dealing with injuries to their top two wideouts -- DJ Chark and Marvin Jones -- and recently had to place Travis Etienne, who was working primarily as a slot receiver, on injured reserve. Smith brings a veteran presence to Jacksonville's ailing receiving corps, but he has only played four games since 2016.

Cut loose

Smith (undisclosed) was released by the Patriots on Tuesday.

Analysis: Smith ended the 2020 season on the Patriots' practice squad and later joined the team on a reserve/future contract in January. He was placed on the PUP list Thursday with an undisclosed issue and will now look to get healthy and find an opportunity with a new team.

Starts training camp on PUP list

Smith (undisclosed) was placed on PUP-P list Thursday, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.

Analysis: Smith signed a reserve/future contract with the Patriots in January after spending a month on their practice squad. Currently, it is unclear what is ailing the 29-year-old, but he is eligible to return from the PUP-P list at any time during training camp. The Ohio State product has played in only eight NFL games since 2016.

Signs deal with Patriots

Smith secured a deal with the Patriots on Monday, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.

Analysis: Smith spent a month on the Patriots' practice squad and has landed himself a spot on the team's reserves/future list. The receiver spent his 2019 season playing with the Cowboys where he found a decent amount of success, catching five receptions for 113 yards and one touchdown.

Joins Patriots' practice squad

The Patriots signed Smith to the practice squad Thursday, Doug Kyed of NESN.com reports.

Analysis: Smith previously spent time with the Texans' practice squad this season, and he worked with the Cowboys during the offseason. The 2015 second-round pick will attempt to earn an emergency role with the Patriots.

Signs with practice squad

Smith signed with the Cowboys' practice squad Monday, Aaron Wilson of The Houston Chronicle reports.

Analysis: Smith spent training camp with the Cowboys and failed to make the final roster, but he'll return to work as a scout team receiver. The 2015 second-round pick likely won't be activated unless an injury arises on the active roster.

Let go by Dallas

The Cowboys cut Smith on Wednesday.

Analysis: The 28-year-old only saw action in four games with the Cowboys in 2019, catching five of nine targets for 113 yards and a touchdown. Smith has seen action in 18 games in his career with the Jets and Cowboys, so he could be an intriguing depth option for another team around the league.

Early promise fades

Smith finished the 2019 season having caught five of nine targets for 113 yards and a touchdown through four games.

Analysis: The former Jet hadn't played in an NFL game since 2016, but after a strong showing in training camp and the preseason, Smith began the year on the 53-man roster and showed flashes of his promise as a deep threat by hauling in his second career TD in Week 2. By Week 5, however, he was inactive and didn't see another snap the rest of the season. With both Amari Cooper and Randall Cobb free agents this offseason, there could be openings on the depth chart ahead of him heading into 2020, but Smith would still be a long shot to have significant fantasy value.

Back at full speed

Smith (knee) was credited with a full practice Wednesday, Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Analysis: Smith's status is merely an estimation as the Cowboys would not practice until later Wednesday afternoon. While the 27-year-old has recovered from his injury, he is still unlikely to be active Week 17.

Dealing with knee injury

Smith picked up a knee injury and is questionable for Sunday's game against the Eagles, Jon Machota of The Athletic reports.

Analysis: Smith was added to the injury report Thursday as a limited participant and his status for Sunday remains up in the air. The 27-year-old hasn't seen game action since Week 4, so there's a good chance he's inactive regardless this weekend.

Dec 20, 2019 1:19 PM EST

Healthy scratch against former team

Smith (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Jets, David Helman of the Cowboys' official site reports.

Analysis: This is the second straight game that Smith will be a healthy scratch despite Randall Cobb (back) being inactive for this contest. The Cowboys' wideout corps will continue to be led by Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup while Tavon Austin is expected to slot in as the No. 3 option.

Oct 13, 2019 12:09 PM EST

Logging first DNP of 2019

Smith (coach's decision) is inactive Sunday against the Packers, Calvin Watkins of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Analysis: After getting heavy usage during Michael Gallup's (knee) two-game absence, Smith will don street clothes for the first time this season. The decision likely stems from hauling in just two of six targets during that stretch.

Oct 6, 2019 12:11 PM EST

Continues slide

Smith was unable to haul in his lone target during Sunday's 12-10 loss to the Saints.

Analysis: After going for 74 yards and a score in Week 2, Smith has slid down over the past two weeks, culminating in Sunday's disappointing performance. Smith is obviously not an integral part of Dallas' offense, but it's worth mentioning that -- despite just five catches in three games -- he's averaging a whopping 22.6 yards per reception. He certainly provides a big-play threat in the Dallas offense, but that will be hard to tap into in Week 5 against a Green Bay team adept at keeping opposing passing games in front of them with just 10.9 yards per opponent reception, 12th best in the league.

Oct 1, 2019 8:25 PM EST

Quiet in win over Miami

Smith caught two of five targets for 39 yards in Sunday's win over the Dolphins.

Analysis: Getting the start in place of Michael Gallup (knee), Smith finished second on the Cowboys in targets and came within inches of a much more impressive performance, as Dak Prescott just overthrew him in the corner of the end zone on the team's opening drive. Gallup's timetable for recovery isn't yet clear, but Smith should see an expanded role at least through Week 4's contest against the Saints.
