Luke Farrell Scores Rare Touchdown In Loss

San Francisco 49ers tight end Luke Farrell had two receptions for 15 yards and a touchdown on two targets in Sunday's 42-26 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. The score was Farrell's second of the season, the other coming back in Week 2's tilt against the Saints. His season-long production now stands at 10 receptions for 82 yards and two touchdowns. Farrell's role on San Francisco's offense is limited almost entirely to acting as an extra blocker. Through 10 games, he is averaging just 1.2 targets per game. With so few opportunities, he can safely be left on the waiver wire. He is unlikely to be as productive in Week 11, when the 49ers face the Arizona Cardinals.

Luke Farrell Catches Touchdown In Win

San Francisco 49ers tight end Luke Farrell drew the start in George Kittle's (hamstring) absence in Week 2. He caught two of his three targets for 15 yards and a touchdown in the team's 26-21 over the New Orleans Saints. Farrell may have had the start and the score on Sunday, but his 59% snap share paled compared to Tonges' 78% and was on par with his 58% share from Week 1. With Kittle on injured reserve for at least another three games, there is an opportunity for one of his stand-ins to step up. However, with an apparent timeshare in the works, it's anyone's guess as to who might stand out in Week 3, limiting the fantasy value of both Farrell and Tonges.

Luke Farrell Agrees To Three-Year Deal With 49ers

Former Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Luke Farrell agreed to a three-year contract worth up to $20.25 million on Monday with $11 million guaranteed, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. It's an addition for the 49ers in free agency that will bolster their tight end depth behind All-Pro George Kittle, who is no stranger to injuries. The 27-year-old Farrell was a former fifth-round selection (145th overall) by the Jaguars in 2021 out of Ohio State. He had 36 receptions on only 47 targets for 318 yards and no touchdowns in 66 games (20 starts) in his four seasons with Jacksonville. Farrell's best season came in 2023, when he caught 13 of his 15 targets for 155 yards. If Eric Saubert leaves as an unrestricted free agent this year, Farrell will have a better shot at being the primary backup to Kittle when games kick off in Week 1 this fall.
