Nick Keizer News

Placed on Reserve/Retired list

Keizer (undisclosed) was placed on the Reserve/Retired list Sunday.

Analysis: All 16 of Keizer's career NFL appearances came for the Chiefs in 2020. The exact cause of his retirement is unknown, but Kansas City will retain the tight end's rights should the 26-year-old Keizer attempt to make a return to the league.

Activated Friday

Keizer (undisclosed) was activated off the Chiefs non-football injury list Friday, NFL reporter Aaron Wilson reports.

Analysis: Keizer was primarily a special teams contributor for the Chiefs in 2020, but he did haul in six receptions for 63 yards across 16 games as well. It is unclear what issue he was dealing with to kick off training camp, but he will now be able to practice with the team and compete for a spot on the final 53-man roster.

Placed on non-football

Keizer began camp on the Non-Football Injury list on Tuesday, Herbie Teope of The Kansas City Star reports.

Analysis: Keizer returns to the Chiefs on a one-year extension after logging six receptions for 63 over 16 games last year for the team. He also played 220 special teams snaps over the season.

Re-ups with Kansas City

Keizer signed a one-year contract with the Chiefs on Tuesday, Kari Williams of 41 KSHB Kansas City reports.

Analysis: In his third season in the league, Keizer finally made his NFL debut in 2020, recording six receptions for 63 yards across 16 games. As long as Travis Kelce is healthy, there's minimal fantasy upside for Keizer.

Serves as blocking tight end in 2020

Keizer logged 302 snaps on offense in 2020 but reeled in just six of his nine targets for 63 yards over the course of the season.

Analysis: Keizer's usage trended a bit toward rushing plays in general, not that he would be frequently targeted on passing downs with skill players like Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill on the roster. Keizer enters the offseason as an exclusive rights free agent, meaning the Chiefs can retain him should they choose to offer Keizer a league-minimum contract.

Catches one pass

Keizer caught his only target for five yards during Sunday's win over the Raiders.

Analysis: The 25-year-old played a season-high 29 offensive snaps Sunday, but it didn't result in increased involvement in the passing game. Keizer has five receptions for 48 yards through 10 games this season as Kansas City's secondary tight end.

Signs reserve/future contract

Keizer signed a reserve/future contract with the Chiefs on Tuesday, according to the NFL's official transaction report.

Analysis: Keizer spent time with the Chiefs during the preseason, recording a touchdown in the final preseason matchup. After initially being cut ahead of Week 1, the tight end spent the remainder of the season on the practice squad. He'll now get a chance to develop in the Chiefs system this offseason as he looks to crack the 53-man roster in the fall.

Hauls in touchdown

Keizer caught five of eight targets for 33 yards and a touchdown in Thursday night's 27-20 preseason loss to the Packers.

Analysis: Keizer ranked second on the Chiefs in receptions, which included his four-yard score toward the end of the third quarter. Despite his success Thursday, it still seems unlikely Keizer will make Kansas City's roster ahead of Week 1.

Joining Kansas City

Keizer signed a contract with the Chiefs on Friday, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Analysis: Keizer was on the open market for two weeks after being waived by the Ravens. With the Chiefs not boasting tons of quality depth at tight end behind Travis Kelce, Keizer will have the opportunity to make the final roster as a bench option.

Waived by Ravens

Keizer was waived by the Ravens on Thursday.

Analysis: Keizer latched on with Baltimore on a reserve/future contract in January but now appears to be jettisoned in order to free up a roster spot for someone else. Perhaps he could've stayed around on a team that doesn't have the top three spots on the depth chart all but settled, as the Ravens are well-stocked with Hayden Hurst, Mark Andrews and Nick Boyle. The 6-foot-5 Keizer is still only 24 years old and should find another opportunity elsewhere.

Signs futures deal with Baltimore

Keizer signed a futures contract with the Ravens on Tuesday, freelance NFL writer Howard Balzer reports.

Analysis: Keizer spent all of 2018 on the Ravens' practice squad after failing to make the active roster out of training camp. He'll aim to fight his way up the depth chart and carve out a role as a special teams player and depth tight end in 2019.

Released by Ravens

Keizer was waived by the Ravens on Friday.

Analysis: Keizer is an athletic undrafted rookie prospect out of Grand Valley State, but was evidently the odd man out in a deep Baltimore tight end group. The 23-year-old will be an unrestricted free agent if he goes unclaimed on waivers.
