Let go by Big Blue

The Giants waived John on Tuesday, Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site reports.

Analysis: John spent the 2021 campaign on IR with an ankle injury and has yet to make his NFL debut. Fellow tight end Jake Hausmann was also waived as it appears the Giants are content on moving forward with a combination of fourth-round selection Daniel Bellinger and free-agent acquisitions Ricky Seals-Jones and Jordan Akins.

Competing for roster spot

John (ankle) faces added competition for a roster spot following the Giants' selection of Daniel Bellinger in the recent NFL Draft, Dan Duggan of The Athletic reports.

Analysis: The 6-foot-7, 220-pounder landed on IR last season, but now that he's presumably past the ankle issue that landed him there, John will look to secure a depth tight end slot this coming season. Also in the mix behind projected starter Ricky Seals-Jones are Jordan Akins, Bellinger, Chris Myarick and Jake Hausmann.

Hits injured reserve

The Giants placed John (ankle) on injured reserve Tuesday, Dan Duggan of The Athletic reports.

Analysis: The timing of John's placement on IR effectively rules him out for the 2021 campaign. However, Duggan notes that John's issue isn't necessarily of season-ending severity, so it's possible that the tight end reaches an injury settlement. If that happens, he could be a candidate for the Giants' practice squad.

Suffers lower leg injury

John suffered a lower leg or ankle injury in Sunday's preseason game against the Patriots, Ralph Vacchiano of SportsNet New York reports.

Analysis: John began to run a route but was only able to take a few steps before grabbing his lower leg. Though there has been no official diagnosis, the non-contact nature of the injury is concerning. John spent a large portion of the 2020 season on the Giants' practice squad and signed a reserve/future contract to remain with the team in the offseason.

Activated Tuesday

The Giants activated John (undisclosed) from the reserve/COVID-19 list Tuesday, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.

Analysis: John has successfully cleared the league's COVID-19 protocols in time for the Giants' preseason opener against the Jets on Saturday. He will likely need to string together a strong succession of reps in order to stick to the end of the 53-man roster.

Remaining a Giant

John signed a reserve/future contract with the Giants on Monday, Michael Eisen of the team's official site reports.

Analysis: John linked up with the Giants as an undrafted free agent last April, but he never suited up for a regular-season contest in his debut NFL campaign. The 23-year-old remains a depth tight end option after spending the latter half of 2020 residing on New York's practice squad.

Let go by Giants

John was waived/injured by the Giants on Wednesday, Michael Eisen of the team's official site reports.

Analysis: John signed as an undrafted free agent out of Simon Fraser at the NCAA Division II level, racking up 112 catches for 1,675 yards and nineteen touchdowns in 25 games in his career. It's unclear how serious the injury is, however, John will reside to the team's injured reserve if he goes unclaimed off waivers.
