Buccaneers, Baker Mayfield Could be Headed Towards Franchise Tag in 2027

Tuesday, August 4, 12:04 PM

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler writes that "it feels" as if the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and quarterback Baker Mayfield "are on a collision course for the franchise tag" next season, which would pay him at least $47 million next year. Tampa could not get a deal with Mayfield done after offering two years and $100-plus million, and the veteran signal-caller has been very disappointed with the team's lack of interest in getting something done before training camp started. The last three Bucs players who received the franchise tag -- Antoine Winfield Jr., Chris Godwin Jr., and Shaquil Barrett -- all eventually got long-term deals. Another option would be to franchise tag Mayfield and trade him to a QB-needy team. If that were to happen, Fowler speculates that Mayfield could be a short-term option for the Los Angeles Rams after Matthew Stafford retires if they think Ty Simpson isn't quite ready. Mayfield has always played with a chip on his shoulder, but he'll have extra motivation in 2026. His dip in production last year could have been due to multiple injuries he played through, but fantasy managers should have their doubts about a rebound in 2026 now that future Hall of Fame receiver Mike Evans is no longer around.

Bo Nix Not Afraid to Run on Surgically Repaired Ankle

Sunday, August 2, 5:25 AM

Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix is just over seven months removed from the initial surgery to repair the fractured right ankle he injured in his team's postseason victory over the Bills, with a follow-up procedure coming as recently as April. Still, he will not hesitate to scramble when needed. In speaking with the media on Saturday, he expressed confidence in the ankle, saying, "I'm going to roll [out]. I'm going to be as athletic as I can be. ... It's a strength of ours and so we've got to use our strengths. For me, that's when I feel at my best, that's when I feel free. When I'm playing like that, when I'm moving around, it's a good thing." Nix has run for 786 yards and nine touchdowns across his first two seasons, with his rushing production providing a safe weekly floor for fantasy while also opening up downfield opportunities for the Broncos offense. With Jaylen Waddle joining the team in 2026, Nix now has the strongest group of pass catchers of his young career, and if his rushing ability is truly unhampered by the ankle injury, he should be seen as a strong bet to outperform his current ADP of QB15.
