Retires as Jet

Powell signed a one-day contract Tuesday, so he could officially retire as a Jet.

Analysis: Powell was a fourth-round draft pick by the Jets in 2011 and spent his entire career in New York. He rushed for 3,675 yards and 15 touchdowns across 109 appearances. Powell last played in 2019, when he rushed 59 times for 229 yards while catching seven passes for 33 yards across 13 games played.

Closes out ninth season in NY

Powell rushed seven times for 27 yards and wasn't targeted in the passing game in Sunday's 13-6 win over the Bills.

Analysis: There were questions about whether Powell would be able to play this season after he suffered what was believed to be a career-ending neck injury last season, but he returned for a ninth campaign with the Jets. The 31-year-old running back worked in a backup role, finishing with 59 carries for 229 yards and seven catches for 33 yards. It remains to be seen whether Powell opts to retire or returns for another season in a depth role.

Quiet in final 2019 home game

Powell (ankle) rushed once for three yards while catching one of two targets for another five in Sunday's 16-10 win over Pittsburgh.

Analysis: Neither Powell nor Ty Montgomery broke double-digit scrimmage yards while Le'Veon Bell touched the ball 29 times. The lifelong Jet will close out his ninth season with the team against the Bills in Week 17.

Cleared for Sunday

Powell (ankle) is active for Sunday's game against the Steelers.

Analysis: Powell's reps were capped in practice throughout the week, but his availability for game day ultimately wasn't impacted. He'll be in line to fill his usual role as the primary backup to top back Le'Veon Bell.

Questionable for Week 16

Powell (ankle) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Steelers after logging limited practices this week.

Analysis: Powell has a chance to return to the Jets' backfield mix following a one-game absence, but with starter Le'Veon Bell back in action, Powell's projected complementary role limits his fantasy utility.

Returns to limited practice

Powell (ankle) was limited at practice Wednesday.

Analysis: Powell was unable to practice in advance of Week 15 action, so his return to the field Wednesday is a positive sign with regard to his availability for Sunday's game against the Steelers. That said, now that Le'Veon Bell is back in the Jets' lineup, Powell once again profiles as a complementary option in the team's backfield.

Ruled out for TNF

Powell (ankle/illness) is ruled out for Thursday's contest against the Ravens, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.

Analysis: Powell missed a trio of practices this week, so his lack of availability for Thursday's tilt against the Ravens doesn't come as much of a surprise. With Ty Montgomery (foot/hip) listed as questionable, Josh Adams could step into the No. 2 role in New York's backfield behind Le'Veon Bell in Week 15.

Ankle injury may force DNP

Coach Adam Gase said Tuesday that Powell's ankle injury and not his current bout with the flu is the greatest threat to his availability for Thursday's contest at Baltimore, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.

Analysis: Powell will miss his second practice in as many days Tuesday, per Connor Hughes of The Athletic. With just one session remaining this week to prove his health, Powell is trending in the wrong direction for an appearance Thursday. Elsewhere in the Jets' backfield, Le'Veon Bell (illness) was listed as a full participant on Monday's injury report, so Powell was poised to take a step back before his health became compromised.

Dealing with ankle issue/illness

If the Jets had practiced Monday, Powell (ankle/illness) would not have participated, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.

Analysis: Meanwhile, fellow running back Le'Veon Bell (illness) is said to be pretty close to 100 percent and has a solid chance to play Thursday night against the Ravens. In that scenario, Powell's projected Week 15 workload would take a hit, especially if he heads into Baltimore banged up and/or under the weather.

Exits late after carrying load

Powell rushed 19 times for 74 yards and caught two of three targets for 14 yards in Sunday's 22-21 win over Miami. He also injured his ankle late in the game, Connor Hughes of The Athletic reports.

Analysis: Powell worked in a workhorse role with Le'Veon Bell (illness) out, getting 19 carries to nine for Ty Montgomery. Per Hughes, coach Adam Gase didn't know if Powell would have been able to come back from his late ankle injury. While Bell will likely return by Thursday's Week 15 clash against the Ravens, Powell's status is worth monitoring in case Bell has to miss additional time.

Slated to start

Powell is in line to start at running back in Sunday's game against the Dolphins, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

Analysis: This was the expected outcome after the Jets downgraded Le'Veon Bell (illness) from questionable to out for the Week 14 matchup, but it's at least reassuring for those deploying Powell in the lineups to know that the 31-year-old will be on the field for the Jets' first snap of the day. Though Powell will start and projects to lead the team's backfield Sunday, Ty Montgomery and Josh Adams should also have roles in the game plan and could earn increased snaps as the contest unfolds, depending on how they perform in their initial opportunities. Powell has seen the most consistent use of the reserve trio when Bell has exited the field this season, rushing 32 times for 125 yards (3.9 per carry) and catching four passes for 17 yards in 10 games.

Could lead backfield by committee

Powell could be in line for a significant boost in playing time following the news Le'Veon Bell (illness) would not play Sunday against the Dolphins.

Analysis: Powell is still expected to share the backfield with Ty Montgomery, but Rich Cimini of ESPN.com hinted Friday the veteran Jets mainstay could be the primary beneficiary should Bell ultimately get ruled inactive. Powell has just 139 total yards in 2019, but the ninth-year running back has averaged at least four yards per carry in each of the last seven seasons and has proven to be a difference maker when given opportunities in the past, at least compared to Montgomery, who has a total of 248 rushing yards across three seasons with three different teams.

Dec 7, 2019 2:14 PM EST

Continues to work as backup

Powell rushed four times for 14 yards and caught both of his targets for four yards in Sunday's 22-6 loss to the Bengals.

Analysis: Powell has touched the ball between six and nine times in each of the past four games. Expect a similar workload for the backup running back against the Dolphins in Week 14.

Dec 1, 2019 6:03 PM EST

Six touches in Week 12

Powell rushed five times for 15 yards and caught one of two targets for five yards in Sunday's 34-3 win over the Raiders.

Analysis: This game featured plenty of mop-up work from New York's depth running backs, as Powell got five carries, Ty Montgomery got five and Josh Adams got four. As long as Le'Veon Bell remains healthy, New York's other backfield options will be irrelevant for fantasy purposes.

Nov 24, 2019 6:14 PM EST

Another seven-carry game

Powell rushed seven times for 42 yards, caught one of two targets for five yards and threw an incomplete pass in Sunday's 34-17 win over the Redskins.

Analysis: Powell was more effective than starter Le'Veon Bell (18 carries for 59 yards and a touchdown) on a per-carry basis, but Bell remains locked in as New York's unquestioned starter. Ty Montgomery and Josh Adams worked in for a combined six carries, but Powell remains No. 2 on the Jets' depth chart.

Nov 18, 2019 9:45 AM EST

One rush in Week 6

Powell rushed once for five yards and failed to catch his lone target in Sunday's 24-22 win over the Cowboys.

Analysis: Powell was the only Jets running back besides Le'Veon Bell to record a carry, but Ty Montgomery out-touched him three to one. Neither of New York's backups will get more than a handful of touches as long as Bell remains healthy.

Oct 14, 2019 8:20 AM EST

Gets first touch in Week 5

Powell rushed for four yards on his only touch in Sunday's 31-6 loss to the Eagles.

Analysis: The carry was Powell's first of the season. He continues to languish as New York's third running back behind Le'Veon Bell and Ty Montgomery.

Oct 6, 2019 3:26 PM EST

Healthy scratch Monday

Powell (coach's decision) is inactive for Monday's contest against the Browns, Randy Lange of the Jets' official site reports.

Analysis: For the second consecutive week to kick off the season, Powell will be a healthy scratch, despite the shoulder injury carried by Le'Veon Bell into this contest. With Powell sidelined again, Ty Montgomery is on hand in the even Bell comes off the field.

Sep 16, 2019 4:08 PM EST

Inactive Sunday

Powell is inactive for Sunday's game against the Bills.

Analysis: While Powell is inactive, Le'Veon Bell will serve as the Jets' top back Sunday, with Ty Montgomery on hand to serve as the team's top backup/change-of-pace option.

Sep 8, 2019 8:47 AM EST

Makes first appearance of 2019

Powell rushed five times for 20 yards and wasn't targeted in the passing game during Thursday's 22-10 win over Atlanta in Week 2 of preseason.

Analysis: Powell looked fine in his first on-field action since suffering a major neck injury last season, with most of his yardage coming on an 18-yard burst. The veteran mixed in behind Ty Montomgery -- who found paydirt on the opening drive -- and ahead of Elijah McGuire. Montgomery, Powell and starter Le'Veon Bell are all versatile running backs who are comfortable catching the ball out of the backfield, and Powell's proven skill set has him ahead of McGuire for the No. 3 spot on the depth chart at this point.
