Stays with Panthers

Rejoins practice squad

Thompson reverted to the Panthers' practice squad Monday.

Analysis: Thompson saw seven snaps on offense and eight on special teams but didn't accumulate any stats. If Tommy Tremble (illness) needs to miss a second-straight game on the reserve/COVID-19 list, the Notre Dame product may get another call in Week 18.

Added to active roster

Thompson was elevated from the practice squad Saturday, Aaron Wilson of Sportstalk 790 Houston reports.

Analysis: Thompson makes the jump with Tommy Tremble due to sit out because of COVID. The 28-year-old has appeared in 10 games for the Panthers this season but has drawn just one target all year.

Joins Panthers' practice squad

Thompson signed with the Panthers' practice squad Thursday, Darin Gantt of the Panthers' official site reports.

Analysis: Thompson was waived by Carolina on Tuesday, but he'll return to the organization after he went unclaimed on waivers. The 28-year-old has appeared in 10 games this year but has failed to haul in his lone target.

Waived by Carolina

The Panthers waived Thompson on Tuesday, Jonathan M. Alexander of The Charlotte Observer reports.

Analysis: Thompson made 10 appearances for the Panthers this season, but he saw just one target and didn't record a catch. Alexander reports that the decision to move on from Thompson was done to make room on the active roster for Trent Scott to be activated from the COVID-19 list.

Finishes first season

Thompson finished the 2020 season with one catch on two targets for seven yards and a touchdown in 15 games played.

Analysis: Thompson, a rookie out of Temple, scored in Week 10 versus the Buccaneers on the only catch of his career thus far. After playing under Panthers coach Matt Rhule in college, Thompson's ability as a blocker and special teamer was recently rewarded with a one-year extension, which will likely keep him in a similar role next season.

Reaches one-year extension

The Panthers signed Thompson to a one-year contract extension Monday, Will Bryan of the team's official site reports.

Analysis: Thompson played in 15 games for the Panthers in 2020. The 27-year-old mostly contributed as a blocker, as he caught just one pass -- a seven-yard touchdown.

Catches first touchdown

Thompson scored a seven-yard touchdown on his only target in Sunday's 46-23 loss to the Buccaneers.

Analysis: Thompson opened the scoring by finding the end zone on the first reception of his career. With that being the only catch he's made thus far, however, Thompson remains far off fantasy radars.

Not suiting up Week 1

Thompson (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's season opener against the Raiders, Myles Simmons of the Panthers' official site reports.

Analysis: With Thompson sitting out, Chris Manhertz will serve as the lone backup option behind starting tight end Ian Thomas. Fullback Alex Armah is capable of shifting over to tight end if the Panthers require another option at the position in an emergency.

Back with Carolina

Thompson re-signed with the Panthers on Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Analysis: The Panther waived Saturday but brought him back to round out their 53-man roster. He's locked in as the team's No. 3 tight end for now, and he could be in line for his NFL debut Sunday versus the Raiders. Depending on Ian Thomas' toe injury, Thompson could log a decent snap share as well.

Falls short of final roster

Analysis: Thompson hasn't played an NFL snap since entering the league as an undrafted free agent in 2017.
