Thompson finished the 2020 season with one catch on two targets for seven yards and a touchdown in 15 games played.
Analysis: Thompson, a rookie out of Temple, scored in Week 10 versus the Buccaneers on the only catch of his career thus far. After playing under Panthers coach Matt Rhule in college, Thompson's ability as a blocker and special teamer was recently rewarded with a one-year extension, which will likely keep him in a similar role next season.
The Panthers signed Thompson to a one-year contract extension Monday, Will Bryan of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Thompson played in 15 games for the Panthers in 2020. The 27-year-old mostly contributed as a blocker, as he caught just one pass -- a seven-yard touchdown.
Thompson scored a seven-yard touchdown on his only target in Sunday's 46-23 loss to the Buccaneers.
Analysis: Thompson opened the scoring by finding the end zone on the first reception of his career. With that being the only catch he's made thus far, however, Thompson remains far off fantasy radars.
Thompson (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's season opener against the Raiders, Myles Simmons of the Panthers' official site reports.
Analysis: With Thompson sitting out, Chris Manhertz will serve as the lone backup option behind starting tight end Ian Thomas. Fullback Alex Armah is capable of shifting over to tight end if the Panthers require another option at the position in an emergency.
Thompson re-signed with the Panthers on Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: The Panther waived Saturday but brought him back to round out their 53-man roster. He's locked in as the team's No. 3 tight end for now, and he could be in line for his NFL debut Sunday versus the Raiders. Depending on Ian Thomas' toe injury, Thompson could log a decent snap share as well.
Thompson was waived by the Panthers on Saturday, David Newton of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Thompson hasn't played an NFL snap since entering the league as an undrafted free agent in 2017.
