Devontae Jackson: Waived by Broncos

Jackson was waived by the Broncos on Saturday, Ryan O'Halloran of The Denver Post reports.

Analysis: Jackson was working to carve out a depth role in Denver's running back corps, and will now search for a shot with another club. His skills in the return game could make him a candidate for the Broncos' practice squad.

Devontae Jackson: Gets into end zone Thursday

Jackson rushed 11 times for 42 yards and a touchdown and brought in one of two targets for two yards in the Broncos' 20-7 preseason win over the Cardinals on Thursday.

Analysis: Jackson came in averaging only 2.8 yards per rush over his first three exhibitions, so he made notable strides in that department Thursday. He also notched his first touchdown of the exhibition slate on a two-yard run in the third quarter. Jackson has been battling Khalfani Muhammad for a backup running back role, and with both players performing well Thursday, it will be interesting to see how roster cutdowns shake out over the next couple of days.

Devontae Jackson: Gathers just 14 yards

Jackson ran for 11 yards on four carries and added three yards on two catches during Saturday's 10-6 preseason loss to the Rams.

Analysis: Jackson turned heads early in training camp, but has now averaged just 2.8 yards per carry through four preseason games. On special teams, he's averaged 19.3 yards per kick return. Both averages trail Khalfani Muhammad, with whom Jackson is competing for the RB4 slot. The rookie undrafted free agent might someday develop into a solid threat on offense and in the return game, but he seems to have lost his mojo and shot at making the final roster. The practice squad is likely in his future.

Devontae Jackson: Mediocre in preseason debut

Jackson ran for 26 yard on 12 carries and had a 23-yard kick return during Thursday's 14-10 win over Atlanta.

Analysis: Though it would be unfair to hold a slow professional debut against the undrafted rookie, Jackson's so-so performance paired with Khalfani Muhammad's 74-yard game places pressure on the former. Jackson has turned heads early in training camp, but with veteran Theo Riddick now in the fold and a Muhammad looking like a potential dynamo in the backfield and on special teams, Jackson's road to the roster now looks longer.

Devontae Jackson: Starts training camp off hot

Jackson has impressed through the first three days of training camp, Benjamin Allbright of KOA News Radio reports.

Analysis: Just a season after Phillip Lindsay went from undrafted free agent to turning heads at camp, Jackson looks to be making a similar impression. Jackson is even smaller than Lindsay was coming out of college and features fairly average timed speed, but still managed to total 2,495 rushing yards and 19 rushing touchdowns during his final two seasons at Division II West Georgia. The Broncos' depth chart appears to be set up top with Lindsay and fellow sophomore Royce Freeman, but Jackson's apparent abilities as a receiver could threaten veteran Devontae Booker's role on the squad. How Booker, Jackson, former track star Khalfani Muhammad, and the big-bodied David Williams shake out in the coming weeks is a battle worth monitoring.
