Lands extension with Chargers

Hopkins will sign a three-year, $9 million extension with the Chargers on Sunday, Adam Caplan of SiriusXM NFL Radio reports.

Analysis: Hopkins was let go by Washington midway through the 2021 season, but he latched on with the Chargers for the final 11 games of the year. During his time in Los Angeles, he converted 18 of 20 field-goal attempts and 30 of 32 extra-point tries. The 31-year-old will return to the team on a multi-year deal that includes $4.6 million of guaranteed money.

Solid campaign with Bolts

Hopkins connected on 18 of his 20 field-goal attempts with the Chargers and also made 30 of his 32 extra-point attempts. Combined with his six-game stint with Washington, the veteran finished the 2021 season 30 of 34 on field-goal attempts and 40 of 44 on extra points.

Analysis: Three of Hopkins' four misses came on attempts from 50-plus yards, a continuation of a three-year slump when it comes to long-distance kicks for the 30-year-old. After a seven-year stint with Washington, the franchise cut him halfway through the 2021 season and the Chargers almost immediately scooped him up, stabilizing the kicker position for the most part from that point forward. It seems likely Hopkins will be retained by the Chargers, although don't rule out someone with a bigger leg being added as competition this offseason.

Perfect in win

Hopkins made both of his field-goal attempts and all four of his extra-point tries in Sunday's 34-13 win over the Broncos.

Analysis: Hopkins returned from the reserve/COVID-19 list to convert from 19 and 23 yards on his field goals. With the help of four extra points as well, Hopkins secured his sixth double-digit scoring performance of the campaign. Overall, the veteran now sports 124 points heading into the final game of the regular season.

Moves off COVID-19 list

Hopkins (illness) was activated off the reserve/COVID-19 list Saturday.

Analysis: Hopkins needed just four days to be activated off the list, just in time to take part in the Chargers' pivotal contest against the Broncos on Sunday. The veteran kicker has been a consistent option since joining the team back in October missing just one field goal across 16 attempts.

Placed on COVID-19 list

The Chargers placed Hopkins (illness) on the reserve/COVID-19 list Tuesday, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.

Analysis: Hopkins has been on point for most of his current nine-game run in L.A., missing one of 16 field-goal attempts and two of 25 point-after tries. The production amounts to 7.6 points per game, but now he's in danger of logging his first absence as a member of the Chargers. Fortunately, the NFL and NFLPA agreed to changes to the return-to-play guidelines, giving players like Hopkins who tested positive for the virus to get out of league protocols in five days versus 10, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Another perfect week

Hopkins made all four extra-point attempts during Thursday's 34-28 overtime loss against the Chiefs.

Analysis: Thursday marked Hopkin's second game on the season without a field-goal attempt. The 31-year-old kicker made all four of his extra-point opportunities, but Los Angeles elected to attempt multiple fourth-down conversions despite being well within field-goal range. Although Hopkins didn't receive any field-goal opportunities this week, the Chargers will face a struggling Texans defense which should make for a high-scoring outing for Hopkins next week.

Dec 17, 2021 1:07 PM EST

Perfect day in win

Hopkins made all three of his field-goal attempts along with all four of his extra points in Sunday's 37-21 win over New York.

Analysis: After two Chargers offensive drives stalled in the red zone, Hopkins was able to drill a pair of chip-shot field goals. In addition, the veteran kicker was able to convert on a 39-yard field goal which extended the Chargers lead to 30-7. Since joining Los Angeles, Hopkins has converted on 12 of 13 field-goal attempts and 19 of 21 extra points, making him a valuable kicker in most fantasy leagues.

Dec 14, 2021 8:35 AM EST

Misses extra point

Hopkins made both of his field-goal attempts but missed one of his four extra-point tries in Sunday's 41-22 win over the Bengals.

Analysis: Hopkins converted from 43 yards on both his field goals, but his failed PAT gave him a missed kick in back-to-back weeks. On the bright side, Hopkins still notched nine points, bringing his season total up to 88 through 12 appearances.

Dec 7, 2021 4:42 PM EST

Misses lone field goal

Hopkins missed his lone field-goal attempt but did make his only extra-point try in Sunday's 28-13 loss to the Broncos.

Analysis: Hopkins isn't known to have a big leg so it wasn't exactly surprising to see the veteran miss a 52-yard field goal Sunday, his first miss since joining the Chargers. In fact, the 30-year-old is just 5-of-10 from 50-plus yards since 2019. The Chargers struggled mightily to move the ball against the Broncos, but with a number of high-octane matchups to come, it's possible Hopkins could have some fantasy value in the weeks to come.

Perfect in big win

Hopkins made both field-goal attempts along with all five of his extra points in the 41-37 victory over the Steelers on Sunday.

Analysis: Hopkins was able to convert on a 30-yard field goal in the second quarter and a 41-yard field goal in the third quarter, although the latter was initially missed before an offsides penalty allowed for a re-kick. The veteran kicker has now made all seven of his field-goal attempts since joining the Chargers.

Nov 23, 2021 1:04 PM EST

Perfect in loss

Hopkins converted on both his field-goal attempts along with both extra points in Sunday's 27-20 loss to the Vikings.

Analysis: Hopkins was able to drill a 46-yard field goal early in the second quarter while also making a chip-shot 24-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. Unlike last week in which the veteran kicker missed an extra point, Hopkins made both of his extra-point attempts this go around, moving him to 16-of-19 on the year for extra points. The 31-year-old continues to benefit from his change of scenery to a more high-powered offense where he's had many more kicking opportunities.

Kicks game-winning field goal

Hopkins made both of his field-goal attempts, while making only one of his two extra points in Sunday's 27-24 win over Philadelphia.

Analysis: Along with Hopkins' clutch game-winning field goal with only two seconds left on the clock, he executed a 30-yard field goal in the third quarter after the Chargers stalled in the red zone. The former Washington kicker has been perfect on field goals since joining Los Angeles, going 3-for-3 in just two games. However, the veteran kicker's inconsistencies on extra points continued as his Week 9 miss dropped him to 14 of 17 on the season. With five teams on bye in Week 10, Hopkins could be a solid fantasy option in an explosive Chargers offense.

Nov 9, 2021 10:18 AM EST

Perfect in Week 8

Hopkins made all three extra-point attempts and one field goal for 48 yards during Sunday's 27-24 loss against the Patriots.

Analysis: Hopkins was released two weeks ago by Washington and promptly made his debut with the Chargers after the team cut struggling kicker Tristan Vizcaino. The 31-year-old placekicker has made 13 of 15 field-goal attempts along with 13 of 15 extra-point tries on the season. Hopkins remains a viable fantasy option in a high-powered Chargers offense.

Inks deal with Chargers

Hopkins signed a contract with the Chargers on Tuesday, Doug Kyed of Pro Football Focus reports.

Analysis: Hopkins was let go by Washington last week but didn't take long to latch on with a new team. He went 12-for-14 on field goals and 10-for-12 on PATs before being released. Tristan Vizcaino, who missed five extra points in six games, was cut by the Chargers in a corresponding move.

Oct 26, 2021 3:41 PM EST

Time up in Washington

Washington released Hopkins on Wednesday.

Analysis: The Football Team signed Chris Blewitt off the practice squad in a corresponding move, and he'll take over as Washington's kicker beginning with Sunday's game in Green Bay. Hopkins' time in the nation's capital comes to an end after six-plus seasons, with the 31-year-old converting on 84 percent of his field-goal attempts and 94.2 percent of his extra-point tries over that stretch. Hopkins had knocked down a respectable 12 of 14 field-goal attempts in 2021, but his 42-yard misfire in the third quarter of last week's loss to the Chiefs was enough for Washington to close the book on him and move on with Blewitt.

Oct 20, 2021 7:13 AM EST

Makes three kicks Sunday

Hopkins made two of his three field-goal attempts while converting his lone extra-point try in Sunday's 31-13 loss to Kansas City.

Analysis: Hopkins was perfect on seven field-goal attempts across the last four weeks and made a pair of field goals in the first half of Sunday's Week 6 matchup. However, he missed a 42-yard try wide left early in the third quarter. The 31-year-old has made 12 of 14 field-goal attempts while converting 10 of 12 extra-point tries in 2021.

Oct 18, 2021 9:40 AM EST

Doesn't miss in Week 5

Hopkins made all three of his field-goal attempts and both of his extra points during Sunday's 33-22 loss to the Saints.

Analysis: Hopkins opened the scoring with a 45-yard field goal in the first quarter that was setup by a Jameis Winston interception. The 31-year-old was then called upon twice for chip shots under 25 yards and connected on both of them easily. The perfect day for Hopkins was much needed after the seven-year veteran missed two extra points during Week 4. He remains a reliable fantasy option as long as Washington's offense continues to move the ball well.

Oct 11, 2021 11:58 AM EST

Misses two extra points

Hopkins made one field goal and went 1-for-3 on extra-point attempts during Sunday's 34-30 win over the Falcons.

Analysis: Hopkins' only miss of the season before Sunday was a 50-plus yard attempt in Week 1. His extra-point struggles are concerning, but Washington will likely let the seven-year veteran work through his woes. The 31-year-old kicker has never made less than 92 percent of his extra-point attempts, so expect him to bounce back in Week 5.

Oct 4, 2021 10:49 AM EST

Slow day as Washington struggles

Hopkins made all three of his extra points but didn't attempt a field goal during Sunday's 43-21 loss to the Bills.

Analysis: Washington turned the ball over twice on it's first three possessions and fell behind 21-0 early in the second quarter. Hopkins' production was limited due to the large deficit, but he was able to salvage his fantasy output by connecting on his extra-point attempts. The 30-year-old will look to bounce back against the Falcons in Week 4.

Sep 27, 2021 11:22 AM EST

Connects on game-winning kick

Hopkins made all three of his extra points and all three of his field goals -- including a 43-yard, game-winner as time expired -- during Thursday's 30-29 win over the Giants.

Analysis: All three of Hopkins' field goals came in the second half after the Giants took a 20-14 lead. The teams exchanged field goals on four consecutive possessions before Washington claimed the lead with a two-play, 75-yard drive to take a 27-26 lead. After allowing the Giants responded with a field goal, Taylor Heinicke led an 11-play drive that set Hopkins up for 49-yard, game-winning kick as time expired. The 30-year-old is a perfect 6-for-6 from inside 50 yards this season.
