Joey Slye News

Solid debut in SF

Slye connected from 47 yards out and converted his lone extra-point attempt in Sunday's 17-10 loss to Arizona.

Analysis: Slye took over for Robbie Gould (groin), who was placed on IR last week. The 25-year-old went 4-for-5 on field-goal attempts with Houston prior to being scooped up by San Francisco. Slye should continue to start for at least two more games while Gould is on the mend, starting with a matchup against the Colts in Week 7 following the team's bye.

Ends up in Bay Area

The 49ers signed Slye on Tuesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.

Analysis: With kicker Robbie Gould (groin) set to miss multiple weeks, Slye will get the first shot to replace him after going through a workout Tuesday along with Michael Badgley and Brett Maher, according to Aaron Wilson of Sportstalk 790 Houston. Slye filled in for Ka'imi Fairbairn in Houston for the first three games of the current campaign, making four of five field-goal attempts and seven of eight point-after tries.

Dropped by Houston

The Texans waived Slye on Thursday.

Analysis: After elevating Slye from their practice squad ahead of both of their first two games to handle kicking duties, the 25-year-old was officially signed to the 53-man roster prior to last week's loss to the Panthers. Though he performed capably by connecting on 11 of his 13 kicks for Houston, Slye will ultimately lose hold of the job with Ka'imi Fairbairn on track to return from injured reserve for the Week 4 matchup with Buffalo. Slye shouldn't have much trouble finding an opportunity with Houston or another organization's practice squad, if he isn't immediately claimed off waivers or signed to a 53-man roster.

Misses one kick

Slye made his lone field-goal attempt and miss his only PAT during Thursday's 24-9 loss to the Panthers.

Analysis: The Texans unsurprisingly struggled to move the ball with rookie third-round Davis Mills helming the offense, and Slye's only field-goal opportunity came from 53 yards during the fourth quarter, which he converted. The 25-year-old is 4-for-5 on field goals and 7-for-8 on extra points through the first three games of the season, but Kai'mi Fairbairn (leg) is progressing is his recovery and is eligible to be activated from injured reserve, so the clock is ticking on Slye's time as Houston's kicker.

Signed to Houston roster

The Texans signed Slye to their 53-man roster ahead of Thursday's game against the Panthers.

Analysis: Houston elevated Slye to the 53-man roster for the third time this season Wednesday, but his signing Thursday suggests he won't be immediately sent back to the practice squad following the matchup with Carolina. Even so, whether Slye remains Houston's kicker for the Week 4 game in Buffalo may hinge on the health of Ka'imi Fairbairn (leg). After opening the season on injured reserve, Fairbairn is first eligible to return Week 4, though it's unclear if he's made enough progress in his recovery at this point to take back kicking duties for Houston.

Another start on deck

The Texans elevated Slye from the practice squad Wednesday, Aaron Wilson of Sportstalk 790 Houston reports.

Analysis: Slye is set for a third straight start as Houston's top placekicker, as Ka'imi Fairbairn won't be eligible to come off IR until Week 4 at the earliest. Last weekend against Cleveland the Texans only afforded Slye one field-goal attempt, which he missed. Now, with rookie Davis Mills set to helm Houston's offense during Thursday Night Football against the Panthers, Slye could be limited in his scoring opportunities once again.

Reverts to practice squad

Slye reverted to the Texans' practice squad Monday, Aaron Wilson of Sportstalk 790 Houston reports.

Analysis: Slye missed his only field-goal attempt in Sunday's loss to the Browns. However, he did convert all three of his extra-point attempts. He has been replacing Ka'imi Fairbairn (leg) has Houston's placement kicker.

Misses late FGA

Slye missed his lone field-goal attempt and went three-for-three on extra-point kicks in Sunday's 31-21 loss to Cleveland.

Analysis: Slye was wide left from 41 yards out with just over two minutes left, negating the Texans' attempted comeback from a 10-point deficit. It was his first miss in five tries this season. Slye's expected to be Houston's placekicker until Ka'imi Fairbairn (leg) is ready and can be reinstated from injured reserve.

Set to be top kicker

Slye was elevated from the practice squad Saturday, Aaron Wilson of Sportstalk 790 Houston reports.

Analysis: Slye drilled all three of his attempts in the season opener and he'll be slated to be the top kicker once more with Ka'imi Fairbairn (leg) still sidelined. The three-year starter will likely officially join the active roster next week with Slye now out of practice squad elevations.

Big game in opener

Slye converted all three field-goal attempts and four extra-point kicks in Sunday's 37-21 win over Jacksonville.

Analysis: Slye was added to the active roster from the practice squad because primary kicker Ka'imi Fairbairn (leg) was inactive. His productive 13-point day may be enticing, but unless Fairbairn's injury is significant, it does not mean much for Slye's fantasy prospects for the season.

Bumps to active roster

The Texans elevated Slye from the practice squad Saturday, independent NFL journalist Aaron Wilson reports.

Analysis: Ka'imi Fairbairn missed Houston's exhibition finale with a minor injury, which was revealed to be a tweak of a leg muscle. Coach David Culley ruled Fairbairn out for Week 1 on Wednesday before the team placed him on IR shortly thereafter. Slye, whom the Texans signed to the practice squad this week, thus will handle placekicking duties Sunday and perhaps beyond. As the Panthers' primary kicker the past two seasons, he connected on 79.4 percent of field-goal attempts and 90.1 percent of his point-after tries.

Best option heading into Week 1

After the Texans placed Ka'imi Fairbairn (leg) on the injured list Wednesday, Slye is the lone remaining kicker in the organization, Brooks Kubena of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Analysis: Fairbairn pulled a muscle during warmups for the team's final preseason game and will now miss at least the first three weeks of the season. Houston signed Joey Slye to its practice squad Tuesday, and he appears to be best option heading into Sunday's 1:00 PM kickoff against the Jaguars. Slye spent the last two seasons with the Panthers and booted eight field goals from 50 yards or longer during 2019.

Heads to Houston

Slye was signed to the Texans' practice squad Tuesday.

Analysis: The 25-year-old was let go by the Panthers at roster cutdowns and will now join the Texans as kicking depth with Ka'imi Fairbairn (leg) nursing a minor injury. Slye has massive range but struggled with consistency in his first two NFL seasons, going 54-for-68 on field-goal attempts and 64-for-71 on PATs.

Let go Saturday

Slye was released by the Panthers on Saturday, Joe Person of The Athletic reports.

Analysis: It was reported only minutes earlier that Slye had officially lost the kicking competition to Ryan Santoso, so it's not a surprise to see the Panthers move on from shortly after. Slye obviously has one of the strongest legs in the league, but accuracy concerns have been an issue for the Virginia Tech product since coming into the league. The two-year starter's big leg likely will net him another opportunity with a different team, but he'll obviously have to work out the lack of consistency in order to be a reliable fantasy option.

Could be released soon

The Panthers may release Slye before Tuesday's cut deadline, Joe Person of The Athletic reports.

Analysis: They'd be doing Slye a favor if it's already been determined that Ryan Santoso will be the Week 1 kicker. Slye has one of the strongest right legs in the league, but his accuracy has been inconsistent, and it sounds like he took a step backward this summer. As a result, the Panthers tried out different kickers, with Santoso perhaps locking down the job when he made each of his five kicks in Friday's preseason game against Pittsburgh. Slye's struggles continued in the game, as he missed from 49 yards on his lone field-goal attempt.

Aug 28, 2021 9:09 AM EST

Misses once again

Slye missed his only field-goal attempt but made his lone extra-point try in Friday night's 34-9 preseason win over the Steelers.

Analysis: Slye watched the newly acquired Ryan Santoso make all five of his kicks, including a 52-yarder, while he missed his first attempt from 49 yards. That contrast, along with Slye's well-documented inconsistencies of late, could cost him his job as Carolina's kicker, a role he's held the past two seasons.

Aug 28, 2021 7:03 AM EST

Needs solid game Friday

Slye could lose ground to Ryan Santoso if his slump continues during Friday's preseason finale against the Steelers, Darin Gantt of the Panthers' official site reports.

Analysis: Slye has missed three kicks so far this preseason, and the Panthers recently acquired Santoso from the Giants via trade. Of course, Carolina only traded a conditional seventh-round pick in exchange for Santoso, and the condition requires him to play two regular-season games, so the team won't be at a loss if Slye wins the starting gig. The Panthers will give Slye another chance to prove himself Friday, but any more mistakes could prove costly.

Aug 27, 2021 11:03 AM EST

Could face job challenge

Panthers GM Scott Fitterer said the Panthers like Slye but will continue to look at other kickers, Alaina Getzenberg of The Charlotte Observer reports.

Analysis: Slye is the only kicker on the roster, despite making just 79.4 percent of his field-goal attempts through two seasons. He does have a huge leg, but even then, he went just 1-of-6 from 50-plus last year, down from 8-of-11 in 2019. He's now been struggling in the preseason, and the Panthers seem to be getting nervous with their opener less than three weeks away. The team will continue to try out kickers and may actually sign one soon.

Aug 24, 2021 1:24 PM EST

Another miss Saturday

Slye missed from 37 yards but later converted a 41-yard field goal during Saturday's 20-3 preseason loss to the Ravens.

Analysis: Slye has missed three kicks in Carolina's two preseason outings thus far, a less-than-ideal start to the campaign following some erraticism last term. Following the game, coach Matt Rhule acknowledged Slye's struggles and hopes he'll get over the hump soon, Joseph Person of The Athletic reports. As a result, it'll be interesting to see how Slye, who has been the Panthers' kicker the past two years, fares in Friday's exhibition finale versus the Steelers.

Aug 22, 2021 12:26 PM EST

Just one point in finale

Slye did not attempt a field goal but made his only extra point in Sunday's 33-7 loss to the Saints.

Analysis: Slye was limited to PAT work as Carolina's offense struggled to get in scoring position for the second straight week. Despite combining for just three points in his last two outings, Slye still racked up 120 points on the campaign, making 29 of 36 field goals and 33 of 36 extra points. Notably, however, five of Slye's field-goal misses came from 50-plus yards, where his strong leg influenced the Panthers to attempt potential record-long kicks on a couple desperate occasions. On the whole, though, he still improved on his rookie point total while finishing 13th league-wide in the category, further establishing himself as a reliable commodity at the position, even despite Carolina's offense teetering without superstar Christian McCaffrey (thigh) available for the most of the 2020 campaign.
