Lirim Hajrullahu News

To compete for kicking job

The Cowboys have signed Hajrullahu, Calvin Watkins of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Analysis: Hajrullahu, who suited up for one game with Dallas and three with Carolina last season, combined for four field goals (on five attempts) and eight successful extra-point tries in that span. The 32-year-old is thus slated to compete with undrafted rookie Jonathan Garibay for the Cowboys' top kicking job. While Hajrullahu's NFL regular season experience is limited to the action he saw in 2021, he did log time as a pro in the CFL from 2014 through 2019.

Cut on Wednesday

Hajrullahu was waived by the Panthers on Wednesday, Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com reports.

Analysis: Hajrullahu spent time with the Cowboys and Panthers last year, appearing in a total of four contests. He closed the season as Carolina's kicker, appearing in their final three games, after Zane Gonzalez suffered a quadriceps injury. Hajrullahu connected on four of five field-goal attempts and made all eight of his extra-point tries for the Panthers.

Perfect to close campaign

Hajrullahu made his only field-goal attempt as well as both of his extra-point tries in Sunday's 41-17 loss to the Buccaneers.

Analysis: Hajrullahu converted from 35 yards on his lone field goal and overall turned in a flawless performance after missing a kick in Week 17. In three games with the Panthers to finish the season, Hajrullahu made four of five field-goal attempts and all three of his extra-point tries, totaling 15 points. The 31-year-old also made all five of his kicks, exclusively PATs, in an appearance for the Cowboys earlier in the campaign. Signed through 2022, Hajrullahu figures to stick with Carolina until training camp, when he could have to compete for the team's starting kicking job.

Misses kick Sunday

Hajrullahu missed one of his two field-goal attempts but made his only extra-point try in Sunday's 18-10 loss to the Saints.

Analysis: Hajrullahu converted from 32 yards on Carolina's opening drive, but he sent a 47-yarder wide right to begin the fourth quarter, missing a chance to put the Panthers ahead. Although he made his only other kick, Hajrullahu will strive to eliminate mistakes in Week 18's finale versus the Buccaneers.

Perfect in team debut

Hajrullahu made both of his field-goal attempts in Sunday's 32-6 loss to the Buccaneers.

Analysis: Hajrullahu was signed last week in the wake of Zane Gonzalez (quadriceps) getting injured. In his first action as a Panther, Hajrullahu did all that was required of him, converting from 24 and 29 yards. Having scored all of Carolina's points Sunday, Hajrullahu will hope for a better offensive performance and thus more opportunities in Week 17 versus the Saints.

Taking over as Carolina's kicker

The Panthers signed Hajrullahu off Washington's practice squad Tuesday, Joe Person of The Athletic reports.

Analysis: He'll step in as a replacement for Zane Gonzalez, who is expected to be placed on injured reserve in the coming days after straining his quadriceps while warming up prior to Sunday's loss to the Bills. The 31-year-old Hajrullahu made his NFL debut back in Week 10 with Dallas, knocking down all five of his extra-point attempts in the Cowboys' 43-3 win over the Falcons.

Lands on practice squad

Hajrullahu signed with Washington's practice squad Saturday.

Analysis: Hajrullahu has spent the majority of the season on the Cowboys' practice squad, though he served as the team's kicker for one game. He'll now be insurance for Brian Johnson while Joey Slye (hamstring) remains sidelined.

Released from practice squad

The Cowboys released Hajrullahu from their practice squad Tuesday.

Analysis: Hajrullahu made his NFL debut in Week 11 while Greg Zuerlein was sidelined due to COVID-19 protocols. The 31-year-old didn't get a field-goal attempt, but he connected on all five of his extra points. Now that Zuerlein has cleared protocols, Hajrullahu's services are no longer needed.

Moved back to practice squad

Hajrullahu reverted to the Cowboys' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's official transaction log.

Analysis: Hajrullahu made his NFL debut Sunday in place of Greg Zuerlien (COVID-19) and made all his extra point attempts. If Zuerlien were to be inactive for Week 11, he'll likely be called upon again.

Perfect in NFL debut

Hajrullahu didn't get a field-goal attempt but connected on all five of his extra points in Sunday's win over the Falcons.

Analysis: Making his NFL debut in place of Greg Zuerlein (COVID-19), Hajrullahu looked good despite a lack of opportunities from long range. He also recorded touchbacks on all six of his kickoffs in the blowout win, and while the 31-year-old will probably be let go once Zuerlein clears the league's protocols, Hajrullahu could have put himself on the short list of possible options the next time an NFL club needs a kicker.

Filling in for Zuerlein

Hajrullahu was elevated from the Cowboys' practice squad Saturday as a COVID-19 replacement for Greg Zuerlein, who won't come off the reserve/COVID-19 list in time to face the Falcons on Sunday.

Analysis: Hajrullahu will make his NFL debut against Atlanta. While he's unlikely to unseat Zuerlein as Dallas' starting kicker, Hajrullahu will have an opportunity to show off his abilities in a game situation for any front offices monitoring the kicker market.

Inks deal in Dallas

The Cowboys signed Hajrullahu on Wednesday, Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Analysis: Dallas' typical kicker Greg Zuerlein was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Tuesday, and it's expected that he won't be able to complete league protocols in time to suit up Sunday against the Falcons. The team thus held a workout with Hajrullahu and Brett Maher on Wednesday, and the former came out on top after connecting on 12 of 12 field-goal attempts. Hajrullahu has bounced around the NFL the past two years, including a stint with the Cowboys this preseason, but he'll be making his debut this weekend if Zuerlein isn't cleared to play.

Working out for Cowboys

Hajrullahu is expected to work out for Dallas on Wednesday, Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Analysis: The kicker was a member of the team's practice squad in September before being released. With starter Greg Zuerlein likely unavailable in Week 10 due to COVID-19, Hajrullahu may have an opportunity to start Sunday against the Falcons.

Time up on practice squad

The Cowboys are cutting Hajrullahu from the practice squad Tuesday, Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Analysis: Hajrullahu spent one week on Dallas' practice squad providing depth behind Greg Zuerlein, but the team no longer feels a need for his services. The veteran kicker will be a candidate to resurface on a practice squad elsewhere in the league.

Waived by Dallas

Hajrullahu was waived by the Cowboys on Tuesday, Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Analysis: Hajrullahu was filling in for Greg Zuerlein (back) during camp while the 33-year-old was on the PUP list. However, Hajrullahu will now part ways with Dallas since Zuerlein was cleared to return to practice Wednesday. The 31-year-old kicker didn't attempt any field goals across the Cowboys' first three preseason games.

Joining Cowboys

Hajrullahu signed a contract with the Cowboys on Wednesday, Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Analysis: Hajrullahu spent time on Carolina's practice squad last year and signed a reserve/future deal after the season, but he was cut in March. The 31-year-old will compete with Hunter Niswander for kicking work until Greg Zuerlein (back) returns from the PUP list.

Heads to free agency

The Panthers released Hajrullahu on Monday, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Analysis: Hajrullahu will hit the open market and be free to start looking for a new landing spot as soon as the transaction of his release is processed. The CFL standout is still waiting for a chance to make his NFL debut.

Garners future contract

The Panthers signed Hajrullahu to a reserve/future contract Monday, Will Bryan of the team's official site reports.

Analysis: The Panthers attempted to sign Hajrullahu -- a CFL standout -- to the practice squad in December, but the kicker ran into visa issues and couldn't leave Canada. Things should be sorted out by the time the offseason program begins, and Hajrullahu may push Joey Slye for the starting kicker role in 2021.

Waived from practice squad

The Panthers waived Hajrullahu from the practice squad Monday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.

Analysis: Hajrullahu was signed by the Panthers last week. His work visa ran into issues, though, and he won't be eligible to play this season. The CFL star will look to make an NFL team in the 2021 campaign.

Links with Panthers' practice squad

The Panthers signed Hajrullahu to the practice squad Wednesday, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Analysis: Hajrullahu's opportunity with the Panthers come in the wake of Joey Slye having missed two kicks against the Vikings in Week 12. The former CFL standout will look to impress during his time on the practice squad.
