Matthew McCrane News

Cut by Arizona

McCrane was released from the Cardinals' practice squad Tuesday.

Analysis: McCrane was added to the practice squad last week but will now return to free agency. The 27-year-old hasn't seen NFL action since 2018 when he appeared in five games with the Steelers, Raiders and Cardinals.

Heads to Arizona

McCrane signed a deal to join the Cardinals' practice squad Thursday.

Analysis: McCrane is headed to Arizona where he will fill a depth role at kicker behind Matt Prater. The 27-year-old should stay on the practice squad barring an injury to Prater.

Waived by Browns

McCrane was waived by the Browns on Tuesday, Tom Withers of the Associated Press reports.

Analysis: McCrane's exit creates the roster spot for fellow kicker Chase McLaughlin, whom the Browns claimed off waivers Monday. Cody Parkey remains the favorite to open the 2021 season as Cleveland's kicker.

Heads to Cleveland

McCrane signed a reserve/future contract with the Browns on Monday, Jake Trotter of ESPN.com reports.

Analysis: McCrane hasn't played since the 2018 season when he suited up in five games for the Cardinals, Steelers and Raiders, connecting on eight of 12 field-goal attempts and all nine extra-point tries. Cody Parkey likely is the front runner for the starting kicker job in 2021.

Assumes kicking duties for now

McCrane has been handling the kicking duties during practice with Cody Parkey (reserve/COVID-19) away from the team, Andrew Gribble of the Browns' official site reports.

Analysis: Cleveland head coach Kevin Stefanski said Parkey could return as soon as Saturday, but they must prepare for life without him Week 11 against Philadelphia. "We will just go out and do our deal, and Matt will be fine. Matt will do a great job for us if he has to play on Sunday," said Browns special teams coach Mike Priefer. McCrane hasn't kicked in a game since 2018, when he went 8-for-12 on field-goal attempts while playing for three different teams.

On standby for Week 11

With Cody Parkey placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list, McCrane is the backup plan at placekicker for the Browns, Andrew Gribble of the Browns' official site reports.

Analysis: There's still time for Parkey to come off the list in time for Sunday's game against the Eagles, and a kicker may not need much practice time to be ready. In addition to Parkey, the Browns placed long snapper Phillip Hughlett on the reserveCOVID-19 list, so there's a chance they will have a new kicker and long snapper or some form of disruption in the kicking game.

Signs with Browns

The Browns signed McCrane to the practice squad Tuesday.

Analysis: Austin Seibert was quickly cut after a whiff in Week 1, and Cody Parkey replaced him and was perfect in Week 2. McCrane is simply depth in case Parkey is hurt or hits a rough patch. However, McCrane hasn't played since 2018 when he made eight of 12 field goals over five games.

Released by Steelers

McCrane was released by the Steelers on Thursday, Dale Lolley of DKPittsburghSports.com reports.

Analysis: McCrane was signed by the Steelers prior to their Week 17 matchup with Cincinnati last season -- Chris Boswell was placed on injured reserve just before the transaction. The Kansas State product went on to make all three field goal attempts (32, 35, 39) in their win. McCrane appeared in five games in the 2018 season -- three with Oakland, one with Arizona and one with Pittsburgh. The 24-year-old will now have the opportunity to look for a more long-term role with a new team.

Wins game on late FG

McCrane made all three of his field-goals (32, 35, 39) and his lone extra-point attempt during Sunday's 16-13 win over Cincinnati.

Analysis: Playing his first game with Pittsburgh, McCrane nailed his third field-goal of the game with under two minutes remaining to earn the win. This was the third team he played for in his rookie season, kicking briefly for Oakland and Arizona before joining Pittsburgh. He finishes the 2018 season having made eight of his 12 field-goal tries -- with a long of 47 yards -- and all eight PATs in five games. McCrane, who was clutch in a must-win game after the Steelers suffered through an agonizing season with Chris Boswell, is an exclusive restricted free agent who made $480,000 this season. Boswell has three years remaining on his contract at an average of over $4.2 million per season and nearly $7.3 million in guaranteed money, so McCrane may be looking for a new team in 2109.

Joins Steelers

McCrane signed a contract with the Steelers on Friday.

Analysis: McCrane heads to Pittsburgh in advance of Week 17 as the team placed Chris Boswell on injured reserve with an undisclosed injury. The 24-year-old made five of nine field-goal attempts and all eight PATs over four games between the Raiders and Cardinals this season. McCrane could quickly find himself in the spotlight as the Steelers attempt to work their way into the playoffs Sunday against the Bengals.

Works out with Pittsburgh

McCrane worked out with the Steelers on Wednesday, Dale Lolley of DKPittsburghSports.com reports.

Analysis: If signed by Pittsburgh, McCrane would be playing for his third team this season. McCrane entered the season with the Cardinals but signed with the Raiders on Sep. 25. As a Raider, McCrane was 5-9 on field goal attempts before being released and finding his way back to Arizona -- only to become a free agent Nov. 19. The Steelers may be looking to replace Chris Boswell, who missed two field goals -- including one in the final moments that would've sent the game into overtime -- against the Raiders on Sunday.

Let go by Arizona

McCrane was released by the Cardinals on Monday, Darren Urban of the Cardinals' official site reports.

Analysis: McCrane started for the Cardinals during Sunday's loss to the Raiders, and converted all three extra-point tries without attempting a field goal. With veteran kicker Phil Dawson (hip) expected to return Week 12, McCrane's spot on the 53-man roster was simply no longer secure. He could see work elsewhere in the league this year as an emergency option at the kicker position.

Making spot start for Dawson

McCrane will start Sunday's contest against the Raiders, Darren Urban of the Cardinals' official site reports.

Analysis: Signed by the Cardinals on Saturday as an emergency option, McCrane will slot in for the injured Phil Dawson (hip). In three appearances for the Raiders this season, McCrane struck true on five of nine field-goal attempts and all five point-after tries.

Signs with Cardinals

McCrane signed a contract with the Cardinals on Saturday, Darren Urban of the Cardinals' official site reports.

Analysis: McCrane worked out for Arizona on Friday and officially joins the team as an insurance policy with kicker Phil Dawson battling a hip injury. Even if the veteran kicker is unable to play, McCrane isn't an overly attractive fantasy option given the Cardinals' struggles on offense (13.8 points per game) and his own issues earlier this season (5-for-9 on field goal attempts in three games with the Raiders).

Works out for Cardinals

McCrane worked out for the Cardinals on Friday, Darren Urban of the Cardinals' official site reports.

Analysis: Cardinals' kicker Phil Dawson continues to battle a hip injury, so the team wants to keep McCrane close at hand if they need to sign a replacement. The 24-year-old struggled in a brief stint with the Raiders this season, making five of nine field goals over three games.

Cut by Cardinals

McCrane was released from the Cardinals' practice squad Tuesday, Darren Urban of the team's official site reports.

Analysis: McCrane was brought into Arizona as a reserve option while starting kicker Phil Dawson dealt with a hip injury, but will ultimately part ways with the Cardinals. The 24-year-old will search for a depth opportunity elsewhere in the league.

Lands with Cardinals' practice squad

The Cardinals signed McCrane to their practice squad Friday, Kyle Odegard of the Cardinals' official site reports.

Analysis: McCrane lands in Arizona after being waived by the Raiders earlier this week. With starting kicker Phil Dawson (hip) nursing a right hip injury, McCrane will serve as an emergency option for the Cardinals' offense. McCrane made only five of nine field-goal attempts during his stay in Oakland.

Oct 26, 2018 12:07 PM EST

Cut loose by Oakland

The Raiders waived McCrane on Tuesday, Matt Schneidman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

Analysis: Since Mike Nugent (hip) was placed on injured reserve in September, McCrane had taken over as the Raiders' kicker, but didn't offer much stability in that role. In his three games with the club, McCrane had converted just five of his nine field-goal attempts, prompting the Raiders to go in a different direction. Rookie Eddy Pineiro (groin) is an option to return from IR beginning in Week 9 if healthy enough to do so, but the Raiders will need to bring in another kicker for at least Sunday's game against the Colts. Expect the Raiders to hold workouts for a number of kickers over the next couple of days before signing one to the 53-man roster.

Oct 23, 2018 12:32 PM EST

Misses another field goal in loss

McCrane made a 43-yard field goal in Sunday's 27-3 loss to the Seahawks, but he also missed wide left from 48.

Analysis: McCrane has now missed at least one field-goal attempt in all three of his appearances with the Raiders, while a struggling offense has limited the kicker's upside. Oakland will look to straighten things out during their upcoming bye before hosting the Colts in Week 8.

Oct 15, 2018 12:29 PM EST

Totals four points in Week 5 loss

McCrane made one of two field-goal attempts and converted an extra point in Sunday's 26-10 loss to the Chargers.

Analysis: McCrane was held to just four total points as the Raiders' offense struggled to move the ball until garbage time, but he also came up short on a 57-yard FG attempt at the end of the first half. He's now missed three field-goal attempts in two games with Oakland, though two of those failures came from 50-plus. McCrane's next test will come at home against the Seahawks in Week 6.
