Phillip Dorsett News

Ready for camp

Dorsett has been running daily and will be ready when Houston begins training camp in July, Deepi Sidhu of the Texans' official site reports.

Analysis: Dorsett made the claim, one which has been heard by many a player rehabbing an injury during the offseason, that he's "in the best shape of his life." After one week on the Texans' practice squad last December, he was signed to the active roster. Dorsett appeared in three games -- each week, his production increased -- before the season ended prematurely by a foot injury. Houston's wide receiver room is led by Brandin Cooks and Nico Collins, which leaves Dorsett batting with Chris Conley outside the numbers, and rookie John Metchie (knee) who is considered the frontrunner in the slot, if healthy.

Lands on IR

Dorsett (foot) was placed on injured reserve Wednesday, per the NFL's transaction log.

Analysis: As expected, Dorsett will miss the final two games of the regular season after injuring his foot in Week 16. The 2015 first-round pick will end his 2021 campaign with seven catches for 110 yards across six appearances with three different teams. However, the majority (three catches and 55 yards) of that production came during the game he got injured in. Dorsett isn't expected to need surgery, so he should be fully healthy come the offseason and will likely draw some interest from teams in need of veteran wideout depth heading into the 2022 season.

Expected to miss final two games

Dorsett (foot) is expected to miss the final two games of the season but won't need surgery, John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Analysis: Dorsett injured his foot leaping for a pass in the third quarter of Sunday's win over the Chargers and was unable to return to the contest. He finished what will likely be his last game of the season with three catches for 55 yards. The 28-year-old spent time with the Jaguars, Seahawks and Texans during the 2021 campaign and will likely draw some interest from teams in need of veteran wideout depth during the offseason.

Injures foot

Dorsett was forced out of Sunday's game against the Chargers with a foot injury.

Analysis: Prior to his exit from the contest, Dorsett caught three of his six targets for 55 yards. In his absence, Nico Collins, Chris Conley, and Chris Moore will head Houston's Week 16 wideout corps.

Big catch in win

Dorsett secured two of three targets for 43 yards in the Texans' 30-16 win over the Jaguars on Sunday.

Analysis: The veteran speedster got loose downfield for a 33-yard grab on one of his two catches and checked in a distant second to Brandin Cooks in receptions and receiving yards. The fact Dorsett was involved to an appreciable degree in only his second game with the Texans is encouraging, and although Houston is completely devoid of postseason aspirations, he and Cooks serve as an explosive receiving duo for rookie signal-caller Davis Mills for what's left of the regular season.

Heavy-ish workload Week 14

Dorsett caught one of three targets for nine yards and had one carry for no gain in Sunday's 33-13 loss to Seattle.

Analysis: Dorsett, who joined the Texans' organization 10 days ago, was put to immediate use after Davion Davis left the game with an ankle injury. He played 39 snaps (48 percent share), which is significant for a newcomer. Dorsett has very little experience in the offense or familiarity with rookie quarterback Davis Mills, but that could develop over the final weeks of the season if Davis is unavailable.

Moves up to active roster

Dorsett was elevated to the active roster Saturday.

Analysis: It didn't take long for Dorsett to make his way up to the active roster after joining the practice squad earlier this week. As a result, the veteran wide receiver is now set to appear on his third team this season. The 28-year-old has just one reception despite being active for three games in 2021, but with the Texans lacking any reliable veteran targets outside of Brandin Cooks (back) and Chris Conley, it's possible Dorsett could be involved more Sunday.

Finds new home

Dorsett signed with the Texans' practice squad Saturday, Aaron Wilson of Sportstalk 790 Houston reports.

Analysis: Dorsett will join his third team of the season after spending time with Jacksonville and Seattle. With Danny Amendola (knee) being placed on injured reserve Saturday, Dorsett will try to provide some emergency depth for the Texans and ultimately earn another shot on an active roster.

Released from practice squad

The Seahawks released Dorsett from their practice squad Tuesday.

Analysis: Dorsett made two appearances for the Seahawks this season, catching his only target for three yards. After being let go by the Jaguars and Seahawks, the sixth-year wideout will now have to search of his third team this season.

Heads back to practice squad

Dorsett reverted to Seattle's practice squad Monday, per the NFL's official transactions report.

Analysis: Dorsett secured his only target for three yards during Sunday night's loss to Pittsburgh. He's appeared in two games with the Seahawks this season, in addition to one contest with Jacksonville.

Elevated by Seattle

Dorsett was elevated from the Seahawks' practice squad ahead of Sunday's game against the Steelers.

Analysis: Dorsett will join the active roster for a second straight week. However, he played just five offensive snaps and wasn't targeted in last week's loss to the Rams.

Reverts to practice squad

Dorsett reverted to the Seahawks' practice squad following Thursday's loss to the Rams.

Analysis: Dorsett was elevated for Thursday's matchup but didn't take the field in the loss. The 28-year-old failed to haul in his lone target in an appearance with the Jaguars this season and will now return to Seattle's practice squad.

Elevated for TNF

Dorsett was elevated from the practice squad to the active roster for Thursday's game versus the Rams, Field Yates of ESPN reports.

Analysis: The wide receiver was signed Sept. 30 and will make his first appearance with the Seahawks on Thursday Night Football. In 2019, his last full season in the league, he caught 29 passes for 397 yards and five touchdowns as a member of the Patriots.

Back in Seattle

Dorsett signed with the Seahawks' practice squad Thursday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

Analysis: Dorsett was on the Seahawks' roster for the entire 2020 season, but he didn't play a game due to a foot injury. The 2015 first-round pick suited up for the Jaguars in Week 3 against the Cardinals but logged just one target on seven offensive snaps. He was subsequently cut. The speedster could get an opportunity if Tyler Lockett (hip) or DK Metcalf (foot) miss time.

Let go by Jacksonville

The Jaguars released Dorsett from their practice squad Monday.

Analysis: Dorsett played in his first NFL game Sunday since 2019 and failed to record a catch on just one target. He has been released from Jacksonville's practice squad in favor of kicker Matthew Wright, who will look to provide competition to a struggling Josh Lambo.

Set to join active roster

Dorsett was elevated from the practice squad Saturday.

Analysis: Dorsett hasn't played in an NFL game since 2019 and will likely provide depth at wide receiver with the Jaguars' entire pass-catching corps healthy ahead of Sunday's contest.

Sep 25, 2021 1:36 PM EST

Signed to practice squad

The Jaguars signed Dorsett to the practice squad Wednesday.

Analysis: Dorsett didn't make Jacksonville's initial 53-man roster, but it wouldn't be surprising to see him be bumped from the practice squad at some point in the 2021 season. The 2015 first-round pick missed all of 2020 due to a foot injury, and in the previous five seasons he operated as an occasional deep threat on offense for the Patriots and Colts.

Released by Jags

The Jaguars released Dorsett on Tuesday, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.

Analysis: The 2015 first-round pick has now bounced from Indianapolis to New England to Seattle to Jacksonville, catching 124 passes for 1,634 yards and 11 touchdowns in 71 regular-season games. The 28-year-old Dorsett has never managed to hold down a starting job for more than a few weeks at a time.

Proclaims full health

Dorsett (foot) said at his introductory press conference with the Jaguars on Monday that he's back to 100% health, John Shipley of SI.com reports.

Analysis: Dorsett's foot injury kept him from suiting up for a single game with the Seahawks last season, but it looks like he's already received full clearance after undergoing November surgery. The veteran speedster can be considered on track for the tentative start of Jacksonville's offseason program, which would allow him ample time to build chemistry with whichever quarterback the Jaguars select at No. 1 overall in April's draft. Clemson's Trevor Lawrence is widely considered to be the likeliest candidate for that honor.

Heading to Jacksonville

Dorsett (foot) agreed to terms Monday on a contract with the Jaguars, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.

Analysis: Dorsett was held out of the entire 2020 season after suffering a right foot injury during training camp. He underwent surgery to remove bone spurs from the injured foot in November, so he's already more than four months into his recovery from the procedure. Once back to full health, he'll contribute as a deep threat in Jacksonville's receiver corps.
