Trenton Irwin News

Fails to build on two-TD game

Irwin played 12 of the Bengals' 64 snaps on offense and finished with one catch for 12 yards on two targets in Sunday's 27-16 win over the Ravens.

Analysis: In his last outing Week 16 against the Patriots, Irwin registered three catches for 45 yards and two touchdowns, but his production predictably took a step back in the regular-season finale while Cincinnati had all of Ja'Marr Chase, Tee Higgins and Tyler Boyd available and at full health. Heading into this weekend's rematch with the Ravens in the wild-card round of the postseason, Irwin will likely maintain a limited role as the Bengals' No. 4 wideout.

Two touchdown catches

Irwin had three catches for 45 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's win over the Patriots.

Analysis: Irwin saw more snaps in the first half when Tyler Boyd aggravated his finger injury and cashed in on the opportunities. He nearly scored a third touchdown on a route identical to his first touchdown in the second half, but the ball just barely went off his fingertips.

Barely used in win

Irwin had one reception on two targets for five yards in Sunday's 34-23 win over the Buccaneers.

Analysis: Irwin wasn't much more than an afterthought in Sunday's win against Tampa Bay, as he played 24 percent of Cincinnati's offensive snaps and was targeted just twice. The 27-year-old likely won't be very involved down the stretch unless either Ja'Marr Chase, Tee Higgins or Tyler Boyd are forced to miss time. The Bengals are now scheduled for a Week 16 clash in New England on Saturday.

Scores on flea-flicker

Irwin had two catches for 58 yards and scored a touchdown on a flea-flicker play that worked to perfection against the Browns.

Analysis: Both Irwin and Trent Taylor were called into action early due to injuries to Tee Higgins and Tyler Boyd. The Bengals might be calling Irwin's name frequently next week against the Bucs.

Role reduced

Irwin played only nine snaps in Sunday's win over the Chiefs, catching one pass on his only target for 12 yards.

Analysis: With Ja'Marr Chase back, Irwin reverted back to a fourth receiver role, one not frequently needed by the Bengals in Week 13.

One big catch

Irwin had just one catch for 16 yards in Sunday's win over the Titans, but it converted a big 3rd-and-12 down for the Bengals.

Analysis: Irwin made a spectacular catch that held up from a review in the third quarter, and the Bengals then scored on the subsequent play on a pass to Tee Higgins to take the lead for good. Irwin's snap count will likely decline next week against the Chiefs, assuming that Ja'Marr Chase returns.

Signed off practice squad

The Bengals signed Irwin to their active roster off the practice squad Tuesday.

Analysis: Irwin received his third elevation of the season prior to Cincinnati's Week 11 win over Pittsburgh, and he tallied three catches on four targets for 42 yards and his first career touchdown. He has now been rewarded for his solid play by being signed to the active roster, though his opportunities on offense may decrease if Ja'Marr Chase (hip) is able to return to action in Week 12.

Returns to practice squad

Irwin reverted to the Bengals' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.

Analysis: Irwin played a season-high 46 offensive snaps after being elevated for the third game in a row ahead of Sunday's win over the Steelers. As a result, the practice-squad wideout logged career highs in receptions, yards and targets while serving as the team's No. 3 receiver behind Tyler Boyd and Tee Higgins, who played 54 and 52 offensive snaps, respectively. Irwin will now require a full spot on the active roster in order to continue suiting up for the Bengals this season, though it's likely he'll serve as the team's best option if star wideout Ja'Marr Chase (hip) is not activated from the injured reserve Week 12.

First career touchdown

Irwin had three catches for 42 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's win over the Steelers.

Analysis: By rule Irwin will revert back to the Bengals' practice squad at the start of Week 12, but it would come as a surprise if they don't add him full-time to the roster. He's proven to be a far more reliable option than teammates Mike Thomas and Trent Taylor.

Elevated from practice squad

Irwin was elevated to the active roster Saturday.

Analysis: Irwin was elevated to the active roster for the third straight game with Ja'Marr Chase (hip) out once again. Irwin will serve as a reserve receiver and could potentially see snaps on special teams as well. Over the past two games Irwin has caught three of his four targets for 41 yards and carried the ball once for 11 yards.

Back to practice squad

Irwin reverted to the Bengals' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's official trans action log.

Analysis: Irwin received the bump up to the active roster with Ja'Marr Chase (hip) missing Sunday's game against the Panthers. The 26-year-old saw the third most snaps at receiver for the team with 36, which lead to a catch on his only target for a fourteen-yard gain. With the Bengals headed into a bye week, and Chase being eligible to return in Week 11 against the Steelers, Irwin may not get a chance to suit up when Cincinnati takes the field again.

Jopins active roster

Irwin was elevated to the Bengals' active roster Saturday in advance of Sunday's matchup against the Panthers.

Analysis: Irwin made his first appearance of the season in Week 8 in the absence of Ja'Marr Chase (hip). He'll likely be active for the second consecutive contest after tallying two receptions for 27 yards against the Browns.

Sent back to practice squad

Irwin reverted to the Bengals' practice squad Tuesday, per the NFL's transaction log.

Analysis: Irwin was brought up by Cincinnati prior to Monday night's game versus the Browns, where he turned 23 offensive snaps into two receptions for 27 yards in the contest. The 26-year-old played less snaps than fellow WRs Tee Higgins (52), Tyler Boyd (51) and Mike Thomas (24), but he ultimately logged more than Trent Taylor (7) with Ja'Marr Chase (hip) and Stanley Morgan (hamstring) both ruled out for the game. While it doesn't look like Chase will return in time for Sunday's matchup against Carolina and Morgan's status remains up in the air, Irwin could find himself in another complementary role in Week 9 should he be elevated again later in the week.

Bumped up from practice squad

Irwin was elevated to the Bengals' active roster from the practice squad Monday.

Analysis: With Ja'Marr Chase (hip) and Stanley Morgan (hamstring) both out for Monday's game against Cleveland, Irwin will make his first appearance of the season with the Bengals. The 26-year-old has appeared in at least one game for Cincinnati every year since the 2019 season and has three receptions on seven targets for 34 yards in nine games during that timespan.

Lands on Cincy's practice squad

Irwin signed with the Bengals' practice squad Wednesday.

Analysis: Irwin played in seven games for the Bengals last season but failed to make the team in 2022. The 26-year-old wide receiver went unclaimed on waivers and will instead bide his time on Cincinnati's practice squad in hopes of getting elevated to the 53-man roster at some point.

Waived by Cincinnati

The Bengals waived Irwin on Tuesday.

Analysis: Irwin appeared in seven games for the Bengals last season, catching two of five targets for 34 yards. However, he finds himself among a wave of cuts ahead of Tuesday's 53-man roster deadline. If he clears waivers, it's possible Cincinnati brings him back on a practice squad deal.

Active at camp

Irwin (undisclosed) was fielding punts at practice Wednesday, Mike Petraglia of CLNS Media reports.

Analysis: Irwin was working on the rebab field during minicamp, but it appears he's now a full participant in training camp. The 26-year-old appeared in seven games for the Bengals last season, recording two catches on five targets for 34 yards.

Participating on rehab field

Irwin (undisclosed) is working on the rehab field Tuesday, Ben Baby of ESPN.com reports.

Analysis: Irwin re-upped with the Bengals in March and no injuries had been reported other than a trip to the reserve/COVID-19 list in January. He appeared in seven games for the Bengals last season, recording two catches for 24 yards.

Back with Bengals

Irwin re-signed with the Bengals on Monday, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Analysis: Irwin appeared in seven games for Cincinnati last season and will rejoin the team for 2022. The 26-year-old had two catches for 34 yards and also returned three kickoffs for 31 yards in seven games.

Mar 21, 2022 1:36 PM EST

Activated off reserve/COVID-19 list

Irwin was activated off of the reserve/COVID-19 list Wednesday.

Analysis: The wide receiver was placed on the COVID list Dec. 31, forcing him to miss the team's Week 17 win over the Chiefs. Irwin will return to his depth role behind the likes of Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins as well as in the returning game ahead of the Bengals' regular season finale against the Browns.
