Let go by Patriots

New England released Gaffney on Tuesday.

Analysis: Gaffney was let go to make room for Malik Gant on the roster. The 30-year-old running back signed with the Patriots late May, but he never seemed like a strong candidate for the 53-man roster.

Signed in New England

The Patriots are signing Gaffney to a contract, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

Analysis: Gaffney spent time on the 49ers' practice squad last season. A professional baseball player who was recently in the Pirates' farm system, Gaffney now finds himself in a crowded running back room. He'll be a long shot to make New England's regular-season roster.

Cut from practice squad

Gaffen was released from the 49ers' practice squad Wednesday, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Analysis: Gaffney has not looked hopeful since the 2016 preseason, and since then, has bounced around between NFL teams. After spending a few weeks with San Francisco's practice squad, the 29-year-old has been waived.

Heading to San Fran

Gaffney signed to the 49ers' practice squad Tuesday, Can Inman of The San Jose Mercury reports.

Analysis: Raheem Mostert (ankle) has already been ruled out for Saturday's matchup with the Cardinals. Jeff Wilson (ankle) is also questionable, leaving Tevin Coleman and Jerick McKinnon as the only two healthy backs on the roster. If the 49ers are looking to add extra depth on gameday, Gaffney's number could be called.
