Working out for Lions

Cunningham worked out for the Lions on Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Analysis: Cunningham was originally released by the Jaguars on Aug. 11. Tuesday's workout is important for the 29-year-old because it means he's clear of the hamstring injury that plagued him early in training camp. Detroit already has four healthy running backs on their active roster, but Cunningham could find a spot on their practice squad if he impresses the team Tuesday.

Released by Jacksonville

Cunningham (hamstring) was released by the Jaguars with an injury settlement Sunday, Hays Carlyon of 1010 AM WJXL reports.

Analysis: Cunningham was thought to be absent from Thursday's preseason opener due to his veteran status, but he appears to have been dealing with a hamstring injury. The 29-year-old seemed to have a decent chance of cracking the Jaguars' 53-man roster, but he'll have to look to latch on elsewhere once healthy.

Won't play Thursday

Cunningham will not dress for Thursday's preseason game against the Bills, John Oehser of the team's official site reports.

Analysis: Cunningham is likely receiving the day-off due to his veteran status, with nothing to prove unlike young players. Alfred Blue, Ryquell Armstead and Devante Mays stand to handle the running back duties with a slew of players out for the Jaguars.

Looking good for roster spot

Cunningham's pass-catching skill gives him a good chance to make the 53-man roster in Jacksonville, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.

Analysis: Cunningham primarily has served as a special teams player and third-down back throughout his career, handling 191 carries and 147 targets. He was barely used last season in Chicago, but he still has an area of expertise that differentiates him from the other running backs on Jacksonville's roster. Alfred Blue has 673 career carries and just 69 receptions, while rookie fifth-round pick Ryquell Armstead (hamstring) caught 29 passes for 175 yards (6.0 average) in four seasons at Temple. It appears the Jaguars will use either Cunningham or starter Leonard Fournette on passing downs.

Moves on to Jaguars

The Jaguars signed Cunningham to a contract Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Analysis: In the first year under the direction of coach Matt Nagy, Cunningham's touch count in Chicago decreased from 29 in 2017 to 12 last season. The presence of Jordan Howard (58 percent of the offensive snaps) and Tarik Cohen (46 percent) limited Cunningham's usage as the latter managed just 6.5 percent of those snaps. With the move to Jacksonville, Cunningham currently is no better than third on the RB depth chart behind Leonard Fournette and recent signing Alfred Blue. Cunningham may well be competing with 2018 seventh-rounder Dave Williams and veteran Thomas Rawls for one roster spot, assuming the Jaguars don't make another addition at the position in free agency or the draft.

Checking out Jacksonville

Cunningham will visit the Jaguars this week, Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports.

Analysis: Cunningham played 212 snaps on offense and 478 on special teams in 29 games for Chicago the past two seasons, though he did get some work on passing downs in 2017 (20 receptions). Jacksonville represents the best-case scenario for his next landing spot, as the team has minimal backfield depth behind Leonard Fournette. With Carlos Hyde joining the Chiefs and both T.J. Yeldon and Corey Grant (foot) still unsigned, the Jaguars are badly in need of a No. 2 running back -- preferably one that replace Fournette in passing situations.

Set to hit free agency

Cunningham rushed six times for 13 yards in Chicago's Week 17 win over Minnesota to conclude the season with 11 carries for 20 yards along with one reception for nine yards.

Analysis: Cunningham's biggest benefit to the Bears was his ability to play special teams, and he's been mostly an afterthought in the offense in his two years with the team. Going into his sixth season, he'll be an unrestricted free agent, and he'll likely have a role as a backup, though it's unlikely he'll be a big fantasy factor.

Loses yardage in win

Cunningham lost a yard on his only carry during Sunday's 24-17 win over the Packers.

Analysis: The touch was Cunningham's first since Week 6. He's battled an ankle injury in the interim, but the lack of action is most certainly primarily due to Jordan Howard's and, to a lesser extent, Tarik Cohen's prominent roles in the run game. Cunningham hasn't had more than three carries in a game this season and, even if something were to change Sunday, the 49ers and their top-10 run defense are unlikely to give up much to the veteran back.

Practices in full

Cunningham (ankle) was a full participant in Thursday's practice, Rich Campbell of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Analysis: Cunningham sat out last week's loss to the Giants and was limited in Wednesday's practice, but now appears to have fully recovered from his ankle injury. The kick returner is on track to suit up for Sunday's tilt against the Rams.

Limited in practice Wednesday

Cunningham (ankle) was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice.

Analysis: Cunningham sat out last week's loss to the Giants due to an ankle injury, and continues to manage his recovery from the issue. If Cunningham is unable to suit up Week 14, expect Tarik Cohen to serve as the Bears' top kick returner.

Ruled out for Sunday

Cunningham (ankle) has been ruled out ahead of Sunday's contest against the Giants, Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Analysis: Cunningham was mainly a special teams player for the Bears, but Taquan Mizzell could stand to see a few more snaps in the event Chicago opts to use the totality of their depth chart.

Dec 1, 2018 2:30 PM EST

Doubtful for Sunday

Cunningham (ankle) is officially listed as doubtful for Sunday's game against the Giants.

Analysis: Cunningham suffered an ankle injury during a Week 12 win over the Lions, and has not participated in practice since. The depth running back appears likely to sit out Sunday's tilt against the Giants. In Cunningham's absence, Taquan Mizzell could benefit from a slight increase in snaps.

Exits game with ankle injury

Cunningham will not return to Sunday's game against the Lions due to an ankle injury.

Analysis: Cunningham suffered an ankle injury during a first quarter punt according to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, and limped off the field under his own power. As long as the depth running back and special-teams player remains sidelined, Taquan Mizzell could see a slight uptick in snaps.

Nov 22, 2018 10:38 AM EST

Fails to record an offensive touch

Cunningham wasn't given a rushing attempt or pass target in Sunday's loss to the Patriots.

Analysis: After carrying the football three times last week, Cunningham returned to his role as primarily a special-teams player. With just four touches and 17 yards on the season, he's not a player who can be counted on in fantasy lineups.

Oct 21, 2018 4:03 PM EST

Sees first carries of season

Cunningham carried the ball three times for eight yards in Sunday's loss to the Dolphins.

Analysis: Surprisingly, Cunningham received his first three carries of the season in the fourth quarter while the game was still in question while the coaching staff chose not to give those touches to Jordan Howard or Tarik Cohen. With just four touches for 17 yards on the season, Cunningham would need an injury to one of the other running backs to have increased fantasy value.

Oct 15, 2018 6:20 AM EST

Not involved in offense

Although he was used on special teams, Cunningham didn't receive an offensive touch in the Bears' victory over the Buccaneers.

Analysis: Cunningham has had just a single touch through four games, and unless the team suffers injuries at running back, it appears his offensive role will be minimal.

Oct 1, 2018 5:49 AM EST

Catches one pass

Cunningham caught one pass for nine yards in Chicago's Week 3 win over the Cardinals.

Analysis: Cunningham was targeted twice in a game that saw him produce his first touch of the season. Other than his special-teams work, he's been largely an afterthought in the Bears offense, and he'd likely need an injury to earn regular work on a regular basis.

Sep 24, 2018 4:43 AM EST

Held out Thursday

Cunningham won't suit up for Thursday's preseason game at Cincinnati, Rich Campbell of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Analysis: The Bears are also holding out Jordan Howard (knee), meaning Tarik Cohen, Taquan Mizell and Ryan Nall are the only available running backs in the exhibition opener. Cunningham may have difficulty finding a regular role in the regular season with Howard slated for a heavy workload and Cohen on hand to handle pass-catching duties.
