Says farewell to football

Baldwin (knee) announced his retirement Sunday via his personal Twitter account.

Analysis: Balwin was just released by the Seahawks on Thursday with a failed physical designation, and it quickly became clear that he had no interest in playing elsewhere, especially considering the health issues he's faced of late. He underwent three procedures over the offseason for various injuries, so the decision by Seattle to cut him loose likely made Baldwin's decision an easy one. The 30-year-old wideout will finish his eight-year career with 494 catches for 6,563 yards and 49 touchdowns.

Released by Seahawks

Baldwin (knee/shoulder/groin) was released Thursday by the Seahawks with a failed physical designation.

Analysis: Baldwin has taken a beating over his storied eight-year career. This offseason, he underwent three surgeries for three separate injuries, which has him leaning towards retirement, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. His release was clearly a hard decision for the Seahawks to make, but one that opens a roster spot for Seattle and clears the way for second-round rookie D.K. Metcalf to grow into a starting role opposite Tyler Lockett.

Contemplating retirement

Baldwin (knee/shoulder/groin) is seriously contemplating his future in the NFL due to the cumulative effect of multiple injuries, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Analysis: Baldwin has undergone three surgeries this offseason for multiple nagging injuries. His most recent, on a sports hernia, led to an estimated recovery timeline of 6-to-8 weeks. It appears the plethora of obstacles he has faced may be enough to keep him sidelined permanently. The Seahawks only added fuel to that speculation by drafting DK Metcalf in the second round of the NFL Draft. Clearly, The 30-year-old receiver has spent all eight seasons of his career in Seattle and accumulated 6,563 yards and 49 touchdowns in the process. Obviously, there is plenty of time before the season starts for him him to make up his mind, but the Seahawks appear to be preparing for other options.

No timetable for recovery

GM John Schneider wouldn't give a timeline for Baldwin's (knee/shoulder/groin) return to the field, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports. "That's a process we are still working through," Schneider said. "He is recovering from that right now and we will see where it goes. ... He's a tough guy, though."

Analysis: Baldwin has endured a trio of surgeries this offseason, the most recent one on a sports hernia on April 4. Prior to that procedure, coach Pete Carroll mentioned a recovery in the vicinity of 6-to-8 weeks, but it appears the Seahawks will exercise caution after all. With OTAs and mandatory minicamp on the docket in late May and early June, Baldwin may not get much on-field work at the Seahawks facility before training camp kicks off in late July. No matter, his health is of utmost important as newly-minted Russell Wilson's No. 1 option in the passing attack, so expect Baldwin to return when back to full health.

Recovery timetable laid out

Coach Pete Carroll said Baldwin (knee/shoulder) will require "6-to-8 weeks" to recover from his upcoming sports hernia surgery, Brady Henderson of ESPN.com reports.

Analysis: Baldwin has spent this offseason in recovery mode from separate procedures on his knee and shoulder, the former of which plagued him since the start of training camp last July. His groin also was a bother during the past campaign, but he staved off the discomfort enough to put up 50 catches (on 73 targets) for 618 yards and five touchdowns in 13 appearances. Once he undergoes surgery again April 4, Baldwin realistically could make an appearance during the Seahawks' offseason program in late May or early June. That said, the powers that be would be wise to hold out the 30-year-old until training camp with his health in mind.

Scheduled for another surgery

Baldwin (knee/shoulder/groin) is scheduled for sports hernia surgery in April, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports.

Analysis: Baldwin needed some time to recover from knee and shoulder surgeries earlier this offseason before he determined if he would need work on his groin/abdomen area. It's a safe bet he'll miss the Seahawks' entire offseason program, with no assurance of being ready for the start of training camp in late July. The typical recovery from sports hernia surgery would give Baldwin plenty of time to get healthy before Week 1, but the issues with his shoulder and knee may complicate the rehab process, as he presumably hasn't been able to do much physical activity since the Seahawks were eliminated from the playoffs. The 30-year-old wideout will have a lot of work to do on his strength and conditioning before he's ready to step foot on a practice field.

Looking at another surgery

Baldwin (knee, shoulder, groin) may need surgery for a sports hernia in early April, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.

Analysis: Already recovering from knee and shoulder surgeries, Baldwin revealed Wednesday that he expects to have another procedure this offseason, per Curtis Crabtree of Sports Radio 950 KJR Seattle. He can probably be ruled out for OTAs and June minicamp, with availability for the start of training camp in late July far from a guarantee. A knee injury cost Baldwin three games in 2018, marking his first absences since 2012 amidst his second-worst season for receptions (50) and yards (618). The 30-year-old wide receiver makes for a reasonable bounce-back candidate in the third season of a four-year, $46 million contract, but it's worrisome that his offseason will be devoted to recovery and rehab.

Bouncing back from procedures

Coach Pete Carroll relayed that Baldwin is rehabbing from offseason knee and shoulder procedures, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports.

Analysis: Though the Seahawks haven't elaborated on Baldwin's procedures, the wideout is expected to be fine in time for the coming season and is on track to be ready for the team's offseason program. With that in mind, Gregg Bell of The Tacoma News Tribune notes that Carroll is "counting on" Baldwin remaining a central part of the Seattle offense in 2019. The 30-year-old pass-catcher notched 50 catches for 618 yards and five TDs in 13 games this past season. Previously, Baldwin had logged five consecutive seasons without a missed game.

Makes three catches in loss

Baldwin hauled in three of six targets for 32 yards in Saturday's loss to the Cowboys.

Analysis: Baldwin showed some fire with four touchdowns in three games between Weeks 13 and 16, but was bottled up for the second straight outing. A lingering knee injury had a severe effect on Baldwin's down year, causing him to miss three games, which was the first time he was sidelined since 2012. The 30-year-old made 50 catches for 618 yards -- his worst marks since 2013 -- and five touchdowns. Fantasy owners were rightfully frustrated, too, since Baldwin didn't find paydirt until Week 11 and recorded just two games over 77 receiving yards. He's under contract with the Seahawks for two more seasons and figures to remain the No. 1 wideout ahead of Tyler Lockett, but his longevity is a valid concern after he regressed for the second straight campaign.

Not on injury report

Baldwin (knee) was not listed on the team's injury report for Saturday's wild-card game against the Cowboys.

Analysis: Baldwin graduated from no participation Tuesday to limited participation Wednesday, a good sign that he would give it a go in the wild card. His absence from the injury report ensures that will be the case and the Seahawks lead wideout receives a matchup versus a Cowboys defense that has surrendered 8.0 yards per target and 12 touchdowns to wide receivers, though just a 62.0 completion percentage.

Bumps up to limited Wednesday

Baldwin (knee) was listed as a limited participant on Wednesday's practice report, John Boyle of the Seahawks' official site reports.

Analysis: A regular on Seahawks injury reports this season, Baldwin has gone two months without mention of a knee issue, but his elevation from no activity Tuesday to some Wednesday bodes well for an appearance in Saturday's wild-card contest at Dallas. In each of his nine games since a Week 7 bye -- sans being inactive Week 14 -- he's played at least 81 percent of the offensive snaps en route to a 38-485-5 line on 56 targets. Assuming he suits up this weekend, he'll be taking on a Cowboys defense that has allowed 8.0 yards per target and 12 touchdowns to wide receivers during the regular season.

Battling knee injury

Baldwin was listed as a non-participant at Tuesday's practice with a knee injury, John Boyle of the Seahawks' official site reports.

Analysis: Baldwin played 57 of 63 offensive snaps in Sunday's win over the Cardinals -- trailing only QB Russell Wilson and the offensive line -- and didn't appear to suffer any obvious injury. The 30-year-old started off last week similarly by not practicing with a shoulder issue, and also dealt with hip issue throughout December. The Seahawks don't seem overly concerned about Baldwin's availability for Saturday's wild-card game at Dallas, but it's still worth keeping an eye on his status at practice the rest of the week.

Jan 1, 2019 4:30 PM EST

Quiet in win over Arizona

Baldwin corralled two of five targets, accumulating 27 receiving yards during Sunday's 27-24 win against the Cardinals.

Analysis: Baldwin had been a viable fantasy playoff contributor prior to Sunday, averaging 4.3 receptions and 75 yards per game with four total touchdowns between Weeks 13 and 16. Facing Arizona's top-five pass defense in the regular-season finale, however, he had his first sub-five reception and zero touchdown performance since Week 7. After the Giants just became the first team to post 30-plus points against the Cowboys this season, the floodgates may remain open for Baldwin to collect his fifth receiving touchdown in as many games.

Cleared to play after full practice

Baldwin (shoulder) was a full practice participant Friday and doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's game against the Cardinals, John Boyle of the Seahawks' official site reports.

Analysis: Coach Pete Carroll referred to the wide receiver as a game-time decision Friday morning, but the outlook changed once Baldwin returned to practice without any limitations. Coming off his best game of the season, Baldwin will take aim at a Cardinals defense that's struggled to cover the slot, most recently allowing Robert Woods to pile up 104 scrimmage yards and two touchdowns. There is some chance Baldwin will lose reps in the second half if the Seahawks jump out to a comfortable lead and turn their focus toward staying healthy for the playoffs. A victory would send the team to Dallas next week, while a loss might result in a trip to Chicago.

Cleared to face Cardinals

Baldwin (shoulder) doesn't have a designation on the final injury report for Sunday's game against the Cardinals, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports.

Analysis: The outlook apparently changed in a matter of hours after coach Pete Carroll referred to Baldwin as a game-time decision earlier Friday. It is possible the Seahawks downgrade Baldwin to questionable once Friday practice statuses are released, but the current plan calls for him to be active Sunday. The team still have something to play for, as dropping to the No. 6 seed would send the Seahawks to Chicago instead of Dallas for the opening round of the playoffs. Baldwin has finally looked like the best version of himself in recent weeks, with each of his five touchdowns this season occurring in the past five games. The Cardinals held him to five catches for 41 yards on seven targets when these divisional rivals squared off back in Week 4.

Considered game-time decision

Coach Pete Carroll said Baldwin (shoulder) will be a game-time decision Sunday against the Cardinals, Brady Henderson of ESPN.com reports.

Analysis: Locked into a wild card spot and facing a lackluster opponent, the Seahawks may lean toward a cautious approach, though they still have incentive to win if they'd rather face the Cowboys than the Bears in the playoffs next week. After returning to practice Thursday as a limited participant, Baldwin seems to be headed for a 'questionable' designation when the Seahawks release their final injury report Friday afternoon. An absence would free up more work for David Moore and Jaron Brown.

Dec 28, 2018 11:13 AM EST

Returns as limited participant

Baldwin (shoulder) practiced in a limited fashion Thursday, John Boyle of the Seahawks' official site reports.

Analysis: Baldwin picked up yet another injury this week, missing Wednesday's session due to a shoulder issue. So far, he's managed one round of individual drills, with Friday's practice to shed additional light on his health in advance of the regular-season finale. If he's anything close to his standard from the past two games, Baldwin will have a good chance to produce Sunday against a Cardinals defense that has given up 142.7 receiving yards per game and 11 touchdowns to wideouts over the last seven contests.

Dec 27, 2018 5:03 PM EST

Dealing with shoulder injury

Baldwin (shoulder) was a non-participant at Wednesday's practice, John Boyle of the Seahawks' official site reports.

Analysis: Prior to this week, Baldwin's practice reps were impacted by knee, groin and hip issues to this point in the season. It remains to be seen what kind of workload he'll be able to muster with a shoulder concern, but he has two sessions to build up his reps from nothing to something. Baldwin has been scintillating since his last absence Week 14, accounting for 11 catches (on 18 targets) for 203 yards and three touchdowns over the last two contests.

Dec 26, 2018 5:38 PM EST

Heating up at right time

Baldwin hauled in seven of 12 targets for 126 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's win over the Chiefs.

Analysis: Baldwin commanded targets on 12 of quarterback Russell Wilson's 27 passes (44.4 percent) in the playoff-clinching win. He made good use of the attention, posting his first 100-yard performance since Week 9 of the 2017 season. Baldwin also scored for the fifth time in as many games, making a leaping grab down the left sideline and landing in the end zone to give the Seahawks a seven-point lead heading into the final quarter. He nearly found paydirt again but came up just one yard short, setting up a Chris Carson touchdown run to seal the win. Look for Baldwin to continue drawing heavy looks in Week 17 against the Cardinals.

Dec 23, 2018 9:36 PM EST

Puts in full practice

Baldwin (hip) practiced fully Thursday, Brady Henderson of ESPN.com reports.

Analysis: Baldwin managed a full listing on a Seahawks injury report for the first time since Nov. 30, a span of nearly three weeks. During that time, he hauled in a touchdown Week 13, sat out Week 14 due to a hip injury, and did enough to return Week 15. In this latter contest, he tacked on his third and fourth TDs of the season during a four-catch, 77-yard performance in San Francisco. With the hip issue now a thing of the past, he'll set his sights Sunday on a Chiefs defense that has surrendered the seventh-most receiving yards per game (171.6) and 14 touchdowns to wideouts in 14 games this season.
