Tommylee Lewis: Rejoins Saints

Lewis signed a reserve/futures contract with the Saints on Tuesday, Luke Johnson of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.

Analysis: Lewis is best remembered as the guy who was decked by Rams cornerback Nickell Robey-Coleman in last year's NFC Championship Game. Lewis moved on from New Orleans after the controversial no-call, signing with the Lions but then failing to earn a spot on the 53-man roster. He'll hope to win his way back into favor with the Saints, having made 34 appearances for the team between 2016 and 2018. Lewis can returns kickoffs and punts, in addition to serving as a part-time deep threat or trick-play specialist on offense. He'll face an uphill battle to make the roster if return specialist Deonte Harris stays healthy.

Tommylee Lewis: Checked out by Texans

Lewis worked out with the Texans on Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Analysis: The Texans may be looking for a new kick returner as they make their playoff push, as they tried out Victor Bolden as well. DeAndre Carter -- their current returner -- has averaged 20.73 yards per return, ranking 23rd among players with over 10 attempts.

Tommylee Lewis: Works out Monday

Lewis tried out for the Ravens on Monday, freelance NFL writer Howard Balzer reports.

Analysis: It was Lewis' first reported tryout this season, after he was let go by Lions before the new campaign started. There was no official word on a contract, but the veteran would add depth, as well as return ability to another team around the league.

Tommylee Lewis: Let go by Detroit

Lewis was released by the Lions on Friday, Justin Rogers of The Detroit News reports.

Analysis: Lewis was activated off the PUP a few weeks ago after being sidelined with an undisclosed injury. With the Lions boasting quality depth at wide receiver, Lewis was going to have a tough time making the team's final roster. He'll now be an unrestricted free agent with the regular season right around the corner.

Tommylee Lewis: Passes physical

Lewis (undisclosed) was activated off the PUP list Tuesday, Kyle Meinke of reports.

Analysis: Lewis will now resume practicing with the team. The fourth-year pro spent his first three seasons in New Orleans, and is now working to earn a depth role with the Lions. Kenny Golladay, Marvin Jones and Danny Amendola are entrenched as Detroit's top three options at wideout, but Lewis could realistically earn the fourth or fifth job if he notches an impressive preseason.

Tommylee Lewis: Placed on preseason PUP list

Lewis will start training camp on the Lions' preseason PUP list with an undisclosed injury.

Analysis: Lewis will be allowed to participate in team meetings and use the training and medical facilities, but cannot practice with the team. The 26-year-old pass-catcher played his first three seasons with the Saints before landing a deal with the Lions this offseason. With Detroit's lack of depth at wide receiver, Lewis has a chance to earn a role as the team's 4th or 5th option should his health allow it.

Tommylee Lewis: Headed to Detroit

Lewis is signing with the Lions, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.

Analysis: Lewis caught on with the Saints as an undrafted rookie in 2016 and ultimately had 20 catches, seven carries, 36 punt returns and 24 kick returns in 34 regular-season appearances. His most memorable moment occurred toward the end of the 2018 NFC Championship Game when Rams cornerback Nickell Robey-Coleman got away with a blatant penalty in the red zone. Lewis will bring speed and versatility to Detroit, where the lack of depth behind Marvin Jones (knee), Kenny Golladay (chest) and Danny Amendola should give the 26-year-old a good chance to earn a spot on the 53-man roster. Lewis doesn't offer much potential for fantasy contribution outside of return-yardage leagues (and even that is far from a guarantee with Jamal Agnew on the Detroit roster).

Tommylee Lewis: Hitting free agency

Lewis is not expected to be tendered a contract by the Saints, making him an unrestricted free agent, Josh Katzenstein of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.

Analysis: Lewis suited up for seven games with the Saints during his injury-plagued 2018 season, posting three catches for 60 yards and one touchdown in addition to returning punts. The 26-year-old has done most of his damage on special teams through his three-year career, and will likely continue that trend if he sticks to a roster elsewhere in the league.

March 13, 2019 1:16 PM EST

Tommylee Lewis: Primary punt returner

Lewis returned three punts for eight yards but played only five offensive snaps in Sunday's divisional-round playoff win over the Eagles.

Analysis: Lewis had a mere three catches for 60 yards and a touchdown in an injury-plagued regular season in which he played just seven games. Even had he been healthy, however, the 5-foot-7 slot receiver has largely been limited to special-teams work during his three-year career, a trend that is unlikely to change in the future due to his small statute.

Tommylee Lewis: Reels in 20-yard pass

Lewis caught his only target for a 20-yard gain during Sunday's 28-14 win over the Buccaneers.

Analysis: The diminutive receiver has been targeted just twice this season, gaining at least 20 yards each time. The Saints have had a revolving door opposite Michael Thomas, but -- even with his big-play ability -- Lewis has been unable to establish himself. It'd be a surprise if he catches on now, even in a favorable matchup Sunday against a Carolina pass defense ranked in the bottom half of the league in receiving yards, 269 per game.

Tommylee Lewis: Won't play Thursday

Lewis (coach's decision) is inactive for Thursday's game against the Cowboys, Josh Katzenstein of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.

Analysis: Lewis will not suit up against the Cowboys on Thursday Night Football. The 26-year-old's absence is notable not due to injury, it simply seems that with Tre'Quan Smith back in the starting lineup Lewis is the odd man out in New Orleans' scheme. Alvin Kamara and Austin Carr should see work returning punts in Lewis' absence.

November 29, 2018 4:01 PM EST

Tommylee Lewis: Scores touchdown in return

Lewis caught one pass for a 28-yard touchdown in Thursday's win against the Falcons.

Analysis: Lewis landed on injured reserve following a Week 2 knee injury but he quickly made his presence felt in his return, catching a touchdown on the Saints' first drive. While Lewis was quiet thereafter, the diminutive receiver played 28 of the Saints' 57 offensive snaps. Still, Tre'Quan Smith (toe), who missed Thursday's game, is expected to return to action next week, so Lewis will likely soon return to a reserve role. He can probably remain on the waiver wire in most leagues.

Tommylee Lewis: Returns from IR

The Saints activated Lewis (knee) from injured reserve Wednesday, Josh Katzenstein of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.

Analysis: Lewis landed on IR following Week 2 with the knee injury, but he resumed practicing four weeks ago and feels good about where he stands from a health standpoint, per Nick Underhill of The New Orleans Advocate. The Saints evidently concurred, so Lewis will return to the 53-man roster to add depth to a wideout group that still has four members remaining on IR. Lewis could challenge Austin Carr for slot duties in three-wideout formations alongside Michael Thomas and Tre'Quan Smith (foot), but it's unlikely Lewis would draw enough volume in the passing game to make for a high-upside fantasy option, even in most deep leagues. In the past, Lewis has made his biggest impact for the Saints as a return man.

November 21, 2018 2:48 PM EST

Tommylee Lewis: Close to 100 percent

Head coach Sean Payton said Thursday that Lewis (knee) has looked good in practice and is "close to 100 percent", Josh Katzenstein of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.

Analysis: Lewis has been on injured reserve due to a knee injury since Sept. 19 and finally returned to practice Oct. 31. The earliest Lewis could be activated from IR is in Week 12, but as evidenced by this news, that seems entirely possible. With the Saints adding Dez Bryant to the receiving corps Thursday, it's unlikely Lewis would provide any solid fantasy value if he's reinstated.

November 8, 2018 8:10 AM EST

Tommylee Lewis: Returns to practice

Lewis (knee) returned to practice from injured reserve Wednesday, Nick Underhill of The New Orleans Advocate reports.

Analysis: Lewis' return to practice begins a three-week window for the Sains, during which time the team must decide whether to activate Lewis to the 53-man roster or allow him to remain on injured reserve. With Tedd Ginn (knee) out for the season, Lewis could see increased snaps as a depth receiver if he were to return this season.

October 31, 2018 12:27 PM EST

Tommylee Lewis: Placed on IR

Lewis (knee) was placed on injured reserve Wednesday, Nick Underhill of The New Orleans Advocate reports.

Analysis: The reason for Lewis' placement on injured reserve remains undisclosed, as does the exact nature of his injury. It was initially reported that the 25-year-old suffered a knee injury in Week 2's tilt against the Browns, but Nick Underhill of The New Orleans Advocate reports that Lewis also sustained a neck injury while attempting to return a punt. Tedd Ginn should serve as New Orleans' primary punt returner going forward, unless the team elects to dedicate a depth player to the role.

September 19, 2018 3:50 PM EST

Tommylee Lewis: Questionable to return to Sunday's game

Lewis is questionable to return to Sunday's game after suffering a knee injury, Luke Johnson of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.

Analysis: The severity of Lewis' knee issue is not yet known. If he's held out for an extended period of time, Ted Ginn could be asked to help out on kick returns.

September 16, 2018 11:28 AM EST

Tommylee Lewis: Returns to practice

Lewis returned to practice on Monday, reports the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

Analysis: Lewis did not play in last week's preseason opener due to an undisclosed injury and he remained sidelined through the weekend. Despite Lewis' return to practice, Brandon Tate continued to take snaps as the primary punt returner. Lewis has been deployed only sparing as a receiver the last two years due to his diminutive stature (5-foot-7, 170 pounds), so he will likely need to overtake Tate as the team's primary returner if he's to earn a place on the final 53-man roster when the Saints break camp in a few weeks.

August 14, 2018 6:53 AM EST

Tommylee Lewis: Remains sidelined

Lewis (undisclosed) is present at Saturday's practice but is still sidelined, Joel A. Erickson of The Baton Rouge Advocate reports.

Analysis: While Lewis is still out with his undisclosed injury, his presence at practice is definitely encouraging. He will remain day-to-day until the Saints can provide a more detailed update on Lewis' status.

August 11, 2018 12:45 PM EST

Tommylee Lewis: Likely out for preseason opener

Lewis (undisclosed) isn't expected to play in Thursday's preseason opener against the Jaguars due to an injury suffered in practice Sunday, Josh Katzenstein of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.

Analysis: Lewis is aiming to find a role with the Saints as a return man in 2018, but he will miss out on an opportunity to make a mark in Week 1 of the preseason. Assuming the issue isn't serious, his next chance to return to game action arrives next Friday against the Cardinals.
