Xavier Grimble: Signs with Colts

Grimble signed a reserve/future contract with the Colts on Monday.

Analysis: Grimble had a workout with the Colts in mid-November but never actually ended up signing with the team, but he'll now be with Indianapolis for the beginning of offseason work. The 27-year-old caught 23 passes for 239 yards and three touchdowns in 47 games with the Steelers before being released off injured reserve in October.

Xavier Grimble: Tries out for Colts

Grimble worked out for the Colts recently, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Analysis: Grimble was released off injured reserve by the Steelers in early October. The Colts could use tight end depth as only Jack Doyle is healthy at the moment.

Xavier Grimble: Waived off IR

Grimble (calf) reached an injury settlement with the Steelers on Friday per the NFL communication's official transaction report.

Analysis: Grimble was placed on injured reserve prior to the Steelers' Week 4 victory over the Bengals. It appears the injury was not all that serious, and he will now be free to look for a new opportunity.

Xavier Grimble: Headed to IR

Grimble (calf) has been placed on IR.

Analysis: Grimble, who logged one catch for three yards over Pittsburgh's first three games, suffered a calf injury this past Sunday against the 49ers. It's a severe enough issue for him to land on IR, a move made in conjunction with the team's acquisition of fellow tight end Nick Vennett.

Xavier Grimble: Status for Week 4 murky

Coach Mike Tomlin said Wednesday that he considers Grimble "questionable" for Monday's game against the Bengals, Dale Lolley of DKPittsburghSports.com reports.

Analysis: Grimble appears to be managing an undisclosed injury, which Thursday's first official injury report of the week should shed some light on. With Vance McDonald (shoulder) also nursing an injury, it's possible that Grimble could receive increased snaps versus Cincinnati if he's able to get healthy.

Xavier Grimble: First catch this season

Grimble caught one of two targets for three yards in Sunday's 24-20 loss to San Francisco.

Analysis: The backup tight end has only seen four targets through three games but Vance McDonald (shoulder) was forced from the game, which could result in a larger role for Grimble in Week 4 against the Bengals.

Xavier Grimble: Catchless in loss

Grimble was targeted during Sunday's 28-26 loss to Seattle, but did not record a catch.

Analysis: With Jesse James now in Detroit, 2019 was supposed to be an opportunity for Grimble to take a step in his development. It hasn't worked out that way, with just one target on a suddenly 0-2 Steelers squad. Grimble's opportunity to grow in his new TE2 role took a hit with Ben Roethlisberger's season-ending elbow surgery. Now the passing attack will rely on sophomore Mason Rudolph, who struggled but had his moments in relief Sunday.

Xavier Grimble: Set back by ugly drop

Grimble got the start and caught one of three targets for 13 yards in Saturday's preseason win over Kansas City.

Analysis: Pittsburgh opened in a two-TE formation with both Grimble and Vance McDonald on the field. There's no question the latter will serve as the team's top pass catcher at tight end, but that also was the case last season when Jesse James had 39 targets and 573 snaps. Of course, there's no guarantee Grimble takes all of the vacated workload, as the Steelers instead could give McDonald more run or use rookie Zach Gentry in a reserve role. In any case, Grimble didn't help his cause Saturday night, with his one catch overshadowed by a terrible drop of a perfect pass over the middle.

Xavier Grimble: Exits practice with injury

Grimble sustained an undisclosed injury during Monday's practice, Dale Lolley of DKPittsburghSports.com reports.

Analysis: Grimble was reportedly examined my trainers near the end of Monday's practice. The 26-year-old tight end's injury remains undisclosed. If Grimble were to remain sidelined for a significant amount of time, Zach Gentry and Kevin Rader could see an uptick in reps.

Xavier Grimble: Signs tender

Grimble signed his original round tender with the Steelers on Tuesday.

Analysis: This will keep Grimble under Steelers' control for another season. He was used mainly in a blocking and special-teams role, as Grimble caught just six passes for 86 yards and zero touchdowns through 16 games. Grimble could see more action in 2019, however, since Jesse James signed with Detroit and only Vance McDonald remains above him on the depth chart.

Xavier Grimble: Tendered by Steelers

The Steelers are placing an original round tender on Grimble, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.

Analysis: Grimble will be allowed to negotiate with teams during free agency, but the Steelers will have the option to match any deal offered. If he does leave, the team will not receive any draft compensation. The 26-year-old has compiled 236 yards and three touchdowns across three seasons in Pittsburgh.

Xavier Grimble: Jury still out after quiet season

Grimble caught his lone target for 16 yards during Sunday's 16-13 win over Cincinnati.

Analysis: Despite playing in all 16 games this season Grimble managed just six catches (on eight targets) for 86 yards. The eight targets were the fewest he has seen in his three seasons but his 14.3 yards per catch were a career high. A restricted free agent, Grimble could return to Pittsburgh in 2019 and possibly pass Jesse James -- an unrestricted free agent -- on the depth chart behind Vance McDonald.

January 1, 2019 10:35 AM EST

Xavier Grimble: Another goose egg

Grimble failed to catch his lone target during Sunday's 31-28 loss to New Orleans.

Analysis: The backup tight end has just five catches on seven targets this season, so he shouldn't be counted on in Week 17 despite facing a Cincinnati defense that which allows the fourth most fantasy points to tight ends per game (10.4).

Xavier Grimble: Healthy to begin Week 13

Grimble (concussion) cleared the concussion protocol Wednesday, Teresa Varley of the Steelers' official site reports.

Analysis: Grimble managed to clear the league-mandated concussion protocol with time to spare for Week 13, and was a full participant in Wednesday's practice. The depth tight end is on track to suit up against the Chargers on Sunday, but Grimble is unlikely to see notable targets behind Vance McDonald and Jesse James.

Xavier Grimble: Suffers concussion

Grimble was placed in the concussion protocol Tuesday, Dale Lolley of DKPittsburghSports.com reports.

Analysis: The USC product will now have to clear concussion protocol before gaining clearance to return to the field. With Grimble and Vance McDonald (hip) nursing injuries, Jesse James could be the only healthy tight end on the roster for the Steelers' game Sunday.

November 27, 2018 9:57 AM EST

Xavier Grimble: First catch in five weeks

Grimble caught his lone target for 3 yards during their 20-16 win against Jacksonville.

Analysis: On the season Grimble has caught every pass thrown to him. Unfortunately, that equates to three receptions for 38 yards. The Steelers face the Broncos -- who allow the sixth most fantasy points to opposing tight ends -- in Week 11, but Vance McDonald is the tight end to have off this roster.

November 18, 2018 6:46 PM EST

Xavier Grimble: Practices fully Thursday

Grimble (concussion) was a full participant in Thursday's practice session, Teresa Varley of the Steelers' official site reports.

Analysis: Grimble's return to practice in full means he's cleared the league's concussion protocol. He'll be expected to resume his typical role as a depth tight end behind Vance McDonald and Jesse James.

October 25, 2018 2:10 PM EST

Xavier Grimble: Limited in practice Wednesday

Grimble (concussion) was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice, Teresa Varley of the Steelers' official site reports.

Analysis: Grimble continues to nurse a concussion and should be considered questionable for Sunday's game against the Browns. Even if Grimble is able to clear the league's concussion protocol in time to suit up Week 8, he'll remain an untrustworthy fantasy option behind Vance McDonald and Jesse James.

October 24, 2018 2:20 PM EST

Xavier Grimble: Career-high 35 yards in win

Grimble caught both his targets for 35 yards during Sunday's 28-21 win over Cincinnati.

Analysis: The receptions give him just three this season, but he has already exceeded his yardage total for all of last season (32). Still, Grimble finds himself buried behind Vance McDonald and Jesse James on the depth chart as the Steelers head in to a Week 7 bye.

October 14, 2018 3:11 PM EST

Xavier Grimble: Inching towards a return to practice

Grimble (wrist) is expected to return to practice this week and has a chance to play in Sunday's divisional showdown against the Browns, Ray Fittipaldo of The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Analysis: There's no official word on Grimble's availability for Week 1 yet, but a return to the practice field is an encouraging development for his chances of playing. Still considered to be the third option at tight end behind Vance McDonald and Jesse James, Grimble holds minimal fantasy value to open the season.
