Catches one ball in win

Merritt caught one of three targets for 13 yards in Sunday's 17-9 win over the Texans.

Analysis: Merritt was elevated from Miami's practice squad and saw his first game action of the season. The 24-year-old wideout played on just 11 of the team's 75 offensive snaps. Merritt could've had a bigger day had Jacoby Brissett connected with him on a deep target during the contest. Unfortunately, the ball was slightly underthrown and Merritt couldn't reel it in. The 6-foot-1, 214-pounder could continue to be used in a depth role for the Dolphins with both DeVante Parker and Will Fuller on injured reserve.

Analysis: Merritt will get his first chance to play in 2021 with his promotion Saturday. He made an appearance on the active roster in mid-October, but he never saw the field.

Returns to practice squad

Merritt reverted to the Dolphins' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's official transactions report.

Analysis: Merritt was active for Sunday's loss to the Jaguars, his first stint on the active roster of the season, but he didn't ultimately play. If the Dolphins are still dealing with a plethora of injuries at the wide receiver edition by the time they take on Atlanta in Week 7, Merritt could be called upon again.

Retained on practice squad

The Dolphins signed Merritt to the practice squad Wednesday, David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.

Analysis: Merritt never had a realistic chance to secure a spot on the initial 53-man roster, given Miami's tremendous depth at wide receiver, but the second-year pro will get to continue his development with the team. As a rookie in 2020, Merritt appeared in one game for the Dolphins.

Inks future contract

The Dolphins signed Merritt to a reserve/future contract Wednesday, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Analysis: Merritt appeared in one game with the Dolphins in 2020, a Week 9 matchup against the Cardinals in which he wasn't targeted. Otherwise, he spent most of the year on Miami's practice squad. He'll work to continue his development with the team during the offseason.

Lands on practice squad

Merritt reverted back to Miami's practice squad Monday, per the NFL's official transaction log.

Coming up from practice squad

Merritt was activated as a COVID-19 replacement for Sunday afternoon's road trip to take on the Bills.

Analysis: Miami will be without Ryan Fitzpatrick for Week 17 given his positive COVID-19 result from Thursday. Merritt swings up to the active roster as a late addition, aligning the 23-year-old for his second game appearance of 2020. He fielded one snap on offense and seven more on special teams during his NFL debut Week 9 against Arizona.

In COVID-19 protocol

Merritt was placed on the practice squad COVID-19 list Tuesday, Adam H. Beasley of the Miami Herald reports.

Analysis: Merritt either tested positive for the virus or came into close contact with an infected person. He'll need to clear the league's protocols before returning to the Dolphins' scout team.

Shipped back to practice squad

Merritt reverted to the Dolphins' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's official transaction log.

Analysis: Merritt only reached the field for a total of seven special-teams snaps and one offensive snap during Sunday's 34-31 win over the Cardinals, failing to make a statistical contribution on a limited workload. With his NFL debut now in hand, the undrafted rookie from Arkansas State shifts his focus on earning another trip to the active roster in the near future. With Preston Williams (foot) deemed day-to-day, and Lynn Bowden currently residing on the reserve/COVID-19 list, there remains a possibility Merritt will be back in the mix for an active roster spot Week 10 against the Chargers.

Rises from practice squad

The Dolphins elevated Merritt to the active roster Saturday.

Analysis: The undrafted rookie will make his NFL debut Sunday against the Cardinals, as the Dolphins need depth at wide receiver after trading away Isaiah Ford and placing Lynn Bowden on the reserve/COVID-19 list earlier this week. Merritt was quite productive in his final season at Arkansas State, producing 70 receptions for 806 yards and 12 touchdowns. He's expected to be the No. 6 wideout on Miami's depth chart.

Heads to waivers

The Dolphins waived Merritt on Friday, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports.

Analysis: The undrafted rookie out of Arkansas State enjoyed impressive collegiate production with 153 receptions for 1,811 yards and 19 touchdowns over his final two seasons, but he couldn't secure a roster spot in Miami. If he clears waivers, the Dolphins intend to keep him on the practice squad.
