Heading to XFL

Jones is leaving the NFL and will join the XFL, Field Yates of ESPN reports.

Analysis: Jones becomes the first player to officially join the XFL, which will kick off it's inaugural season in February 2020. Jones was a free agent and was likely looking at no more than a backup role at best in the NFL this season.

Waived by Oakland

Jones was waived/released by the Raiders on Wednesday, Matt Schneidman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

Analysis: Jones was waived to make room for tight end Erik Swoope who was signed by the team Tuesday. The 2013 fourth-round pick had a lengthy run as the backup quarterback in Pittsburgh, making five starts in five years before he was unseated by Joshua Dobbs and Mason Rudolph during the 2018 preseason. Derek Carr, Mike Glennon and Nathan Peterman remain on the quarterback depth chart for the Raiders.

Joining Gruden in Oakland

Jones is signing with the Raiders, Dale Lolley of DKPittsburghSports.com reports.

Analysis: The 2013 fourth-round pick had a lengthy run as the backup quarterback in Pittsburgh, making five starts in five years before he was unseated by Joshua Dobbs and Mason Rudolph during the 2018 preseason. Jones spent a couple weeks with the Jaguars in November and now will head to Oakland to compete against Mike Glennon and Nathan Peterman for the backup job behind Derek Carr.

Let go by Jacksonville

Jones was released by the Jaguars on Monday, John Reid of The Florida Times-Union reports.

Analysis: Jones was cut by Jacksonville to make room for Corey Robinson on the 53-man roster. The 2013 fourth-round pick spent less than three weeks with the Jaguars, and was unable to usurp Cody Kessler as the primary backup to Blake Bortles during that time. Jones is now a free agent, and will look to secure a depth role elsewhere in the league.

Set to sign with Jacksonville

Jones is expected to sign with the Jaguars this week, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Analysis: A 2013 fourth-round pick with five career NFL starts to his name, Jones has worked out for a number of teams since being cut by the Steelers at the conclusion of the preseason. It appears he'll now find a new home in Jacksonville, but his stay on the 53-man roster may be an abbreviated one. According to Schefter, the Jaguars are bringing Jones aboard merely as an insurance option with starter Blake Bortles nursing an injury to his non-throwing shoulder. The issue isn't expected to prevent Bortles from being available for the first game out of the Jaguars' bye week Nov. 11 against the Colts, and if that ends up being the case, Jones could be released without ever suiting up for his new team. Cody Kessler is entrenched as the No. 2 option on the depth chart, so Jones would merely serve in a backup capacity if Bortles misses the Week 10 matchup.

Will likely land job soon

Jones has been working out for multiple teams and is expected to sign with one soon, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Analysis: Jones has worked out for the Bills, Cowboys, Lions and Jaguars, among others. Wherever the 29-year-old quarterback lands, he'll be used in a backup role. Jones played in three games for the Steelers last year, completing 23 of 28 passes (82 percent) for 239 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Works out for Dallas

Jones is working out for the Cowboys on Monday, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports.

Analysis: Jones was cut by the Steelers prior to the start of the 2018 season after three years with the team. Jones appeared in 19 games for Pittsburgh, making five starts, and posted eight touchdowns and seven interceptions in that time. Should he end up signing with the Cowboys, he'd likely be viewed as an upgrade over Cooper Rush as the team's backup quarterback.

Released by Pittsburgh

Jones was released by the Steelers on Saturday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Analysis: Jones was expected to stick around for another year even after the Steelers drafted Mason Rudolph, but a huge preseason from 2017 fourth-round pick Josh Dobbs led to a new plan. Jones should draw some interest around the league as a modest upgrade on some of the uglier backup QB situations.

Rough outing Saturday

Jones completed six of nine passes for 44 yards and an interception during Saturday's preseason game against the Titans.

Analysis: The interception came just three plays after first-round draft pick Terrell Edmunds intercepted Marcus Mariota and returned it to the Tennessee 24-yard line. Jones also fumbled deep in Pittsburgh territory, but avoided further damage with his own recovery. This effort did little to improve Jones' chances of winning the back-up quarterback job with just one preseason game remaining.

Continues fighting for a roster spot

Jones looked solid during a two-minute drill Sunday, completing 4-of-5 passes for 60 yards and a touchdown in less than a minute, Mark Kaboly of The Athletic PGH reports.

Analysis: This is positive news for Jones, who has had limited opportunities to impress Coach Mike Tomlin, although he is a perfect 4-of-4 for 83 yards and a touchdown in limited action this preseason. After sitting out last Thursday against Green Bay, he should see action in the final two games against Tennessee and Carolina before any roster decisions are made.
