In early May, it was reported that Josh Gordon failed another drug test and is facing a lengthy suspension. This is a look at how his value has dropped and who stands to benefit, using recent mock draft ADP data from redraft 12-team standard leagues.
Josh Gordon (CLE) - ADP: 8.09
Recently, we learned that Gordon was already in Stage 3 of the substance-abuse program at the time of his violation. He's expected to face a suspension of 8 - 16 games. Since his failed drug test, his value has steadily declined as drafters are losing hope that his appeal will be granted. His current value is in the middle of the 8th round.
Despite the downside of possibly losing Gordon for the whole season, he is good enough that he could still be worth an 8th round pick based on potential alone. This is a boom-bust pick with upside so high that he's a more interesting pick than guys like the low-ceiling Riley Cooper, who is also being drafted in that range.
Jordan Cameron (CLE) - ADP: 5.12
The Browns' next best target is Pro Bowl tight end Jordan Cameron. He stands to gain even more targets this year with Gordon out. The downside is that he'll draw increased coverage from opposing defenses now that he's the primary receiver. However, Cameron had stellar performances in the first two games of the 2013 season when Gordon was out.
The rest of the receiving corps for the Browns is so uninspiring that they are frequently going undrafted in mocks. Miles Austin signed with the Browns last month and he's started to sneak into the rankings. Nate Burleson is another capable veteran new to the team that may get some targets.
Andrew Hawkins, the speedy slot receiver at 5' 7" 180 lbs., may have the highest upside of them all. He flashed potential with the Bengals showcasing his 4.3 speed. He's the one of this group that is most worthy of a late-round draft pick, especially in PPR leagues.
Shifts in player value like this will continue to happen throughout the summer. Stay up to date with this and other important situations by continuing to practice with mock drafts.
